  • Is there a trick to using Ultimate Quik Wax? I need help ...

I have been using UQD as a drying aid with great results. After a few suggestions that I try UQW instead, I gave it a try. I was surprised to find that instead of working as well or better than the UQD, the Quik Wax made the paint splotchy and left ghost images of the water droplets that had been on the paint, mainly on the horizontal surfaces (which BTW were losing their beading rather quickly) I finished drying the car with UQD and tried to use the UQW again with fresh towels, but at least on the horizontal surfaces it left smearing, water spot 'ghosts' and cloudiness . I'm ready to put a coat of ULW on to see if that removes the smearing etc, if need be I'll use a polishing pad to apply the ULW. The finish is still flawless and swirl free, so I know I don't need to polish the paint, I just need to figure out a way to rid myself of the smearing and ghosting

Did you do this in the sun?
I seem to get this on a warmer day outside occasionally with a 2 bucket.
I try to wash and dry early or late to avoid the problem. Even better, I pull into the garage after rinsing and blow most of the water off.
Then I will use D156(UQW) to complete the dry down.

If I do have a problem I will spray UQD on a micro and give the car a final wipe.

You probably already know all of this......I'm just throwing my 2 cents

Did you leave the water on the car or sheet the surface to remove a majority of the water?

You don't need a lot of UQW. You have to judge by the size of the panel you are working on. It could be 1 spritz, 2 spritz, etc. I use 2 towels. One to dry and one to buff.

Try applying UQD onto a microfiber and apply to the surface, as like removes like.

I've never had (or even heard of anyone having) issues with UQW.

It's gotta be one of the easiest to use products out there IMO. Like Guz said, are you using two towels?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Re: Is there a trick to using Ultimate Quik Wax? I need help ...

It was in the later afternoon with full cloud cover, not too hot and I would guess low to medium humidity. The towels I use are very absorbent and I only use 1 because after I wipe the towel across the paint, what little bit of water left behind evaporates too fast for me to get a second towel and I don't want to dry wipe the finish. Reapplying UQW didn't do any good, it just deepened the smears and water droplet ghosts and I didn't have any luck using UQD to remove the ghosting/smearing wither, I just switched to it on the remainder of the car after I saw what was happening and when I couldn't "fix" the problem. I even tried wiping with more pressure than I was comfortable with and a dry towel and all that did was fade the ghosting a bit, but I could feel how slick it was from the UQW. I even tried using a damp (water) mf immediately followed by a dry mf to see if that would level off the finish, but nope, still blotchy

Part of me is saying to do a 2-step on the car-polish to remove the spotting and rewaxing to seal the paint again, but other than the issues with UQW, the car looks awesome, no scratches or swirls, no paint fade (remember it is SS paint) and no staining from contaminates. As of now it's been a little over 12 hours since I touched the car, so I'm going to go outside to see if time has made any difference. I might even try reapplying some UQW or UQD (if the blotchiness is still there) to see if a second LIGHTER application makes a difference. Update to follow ...

Re: Is there a trick to using Ultimate Quik Wax? I need help ...

***** I tried to post an update, but my time had run out so I couldn't edit my post, so I did a bunch of typing for nothing. Basically I went outside and it had sprinkled. There was a drop or two of water every square foot or so and a few light streaks. I used a clean cloth and buffed the streaks along with any nearby water drops and the streaks buffed out. Looks like there must have been too much water in the equation last night, because it seems like the 12 hour 'cure time' cleared up the topical issues. I don't know that I'll be using the UQW for drying anymore, it doesn't seem to like water (DUH, it's advertised as being highly hydrophobic). So I guess I'll continue to use the UQD for drying and apply the UQW for protection. I think I might have been the problem, using too much UQW ... I think I'm going to start holding the sprayer a lot farther away from the car and only using an ultra-fine mist instead of a heavy spritz, it seems like that should work better.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

You are the only one that I know of that has had issues using it as a drying aid. It sounds like you either have too much water on the surface and over applied it. When the weather is too cold UQW can streak. I've seen that happen.

I'm honestly starting to think it's my paint. This is not the first time it has clouded/streaked on me with an LSP. Gold Class Carnauba +, NXT 2.0, etc especially when hand applied & removed, but UPW didn't. I just now went over to my neighbor's house where he had just finished washing his truck (the same one I compounded and sealed) I sprayed the UQW on his hood - much heavier than I did on my car, but still just a light mist and it spread forever and buffed off flawlessly. The hood looked like I had just finished a 2-step on it again. I went back to my car and from about 3 feet away triggered a mist and let it float down onto the paint. After buffing the entire car this way, I then went to get a clean dry cloth and buffed the car again. The results were much better, but it's still cloudy and I need sunlight to see what the real results are. The paint is extremely slick and smooth and you can feel the UQW on the surface, now I just need to know if you can SEE the UQW, meaning the smears and clouding.

Do you have any LSP under the UQW that could be reacting with it causing the streaking etc?

Just a few coats of Ultimate Paste Wax ... I'm out of that and when I went to the store to get more, they were out of the paste, so I got the liquid. Let's see if that reacts any differently.

It might be worth an experiment to see if the UQW reacts to bare paint in the same way it does right now. (polish an area so there is nothing on it)

Based on your reply it could be too much UPW on the paint and is making things difficult for you.

                          ^^Would be a good test.

What else have you used prior to UQW (ie other spray waxes)?

Yeah, it sounds like it could be a build up of too much product and/or different products.
                            Still strange though....

In order, I've used Ultimate Polish (1 application), Ultimate Paste Wax (2 applications) and Ultimate Quik Detailer (multiple applications, but as a drying aid) before using the Ultimate Quik Wax, nothing else.

In the morning, weather permitting and assuming I can escape the wife's clutches, I'll start with a good wash with no drying aid and then try the UQW. If that doesn't work, since the car is already washed, I'll try polishing the top surfaces (where the worst of the smearing/ghosting is) then try the UQW. If THAT works, should I go ahead and give the car a coat of ULW just to make sure I have a full protective layer?
