  • Tar Dust Removal

My daughter's car and a lot of others at her company got coated with some kind of tar like dust that sticks to the paint. It is just like a brown pollen but it is stuck to the car. The paint is really rough and it will not come off easily. Apparently the company next door was grinding asphalt or something of that nature. Whatever it is it will not come off just by washing. It will come off with clay, but the clay gets filthy in a few rubs, and it would use a ton of clay to get it all off, and I don't want to use my new nano towel and ruin it after one use. Plus I think it would be one heck of a job to do.

I was thinking of using VarSol (paint thinner) on the car. It does take it off also. Wondering what doing the whole car will do. Probably ruin her nice coated asphat driveway, or kill the grass on boths sides of the driveway when I wash the solvent off. Is there any commercially available solvent out there to get this stuff of that firstly, will not hurt the clearcoat, and secondly will not ruin the asphalt driveway and kill grass?

The owners of these affected car are trying to get the company to repair these cars but I personally don't hold out much hope.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Agreed. That's a good benefit to trix.

One of the few non Megs product I love to use is in fact Tardis from autosmart - got it from Polished Bliss in the UK (I'm sure it's available in the US as well). That website has a great video on how to use it. It's part of my routine paint decontamination now (along with iron removal), after which claying is just a very light job. Tar just melts away. Hasn't damaged our driveway or plants around it...

              Re: Tar Dust Removal

I would use Tarminator like Guz suggested, you can by it at most auto part store's and it is cheap. Then follow up with a wash to get it all of the paint when you are done.

                  Re: Tar Dust Removal

For anyone who ever has this problem and searches, I couldn't easily find any of the recommended tar removers, so I ended up using mineral spirits, commonly known as paint thinner. I just soaked a microfiber cloth in the stuff (wear rubber gloves)and wet a section at a time. Waited a minute and then wiped the tar off. It still wasn't easy, especially trying not to instill any scratches. Anyway did section by section, washed each section with auto soap/water twice to get the mineral spirits/tar residue off and eureka...looks real good. The whole car felt like #200 sand paper before and now it is smooth. Contrary to some postings I read on other sites, the clearcoat did not melt LOL and was not damaged at all. Matter of fact, the only "damage" was the one foot square on the hood I experimented with and cleaned with clay is now dull. No problem; I can polish that out. Friday we will clay, spot correct with UC, if necessary. polish and then wax with UW and she will be like new. Thanks to all again for your replies.
