  • Dressing tires

I am looking for suggestions for a tire dressing product. I prefer a spray with a somewhat dull finish. I do not like the super-shiny/greasy/wet look.

I am also looking for suggestions on applicators for tire dressing. My new tires have sidewalls with a huge number of very thin grooves that I am finding difficult to get product into.

    Re: Dressing tires

Two dressings that I like are D163 tire & trim gel from the detailer line and the other is ultimate black tire coating. The ultimate black tire coating is an aerosol so be prepared to have a microfiber available to remove any overspray. It does dry fairly quick. D163 can be controlled in terms of shine. Meaning 1 coat would give you the look you are going for. 2 coats will add more gloss. Ultimate black tire coating has a black look with a hint of sheen. All you need is a tire applicator to put on D163.

      Guz,

Thanks for the reply. The ultimate black tire coating you mentioned sounds similar to a product that I have used before. It looks wet but is completely dry after a minute or two. This product was too shiny for me and it turned my tires brown after awhile. I am cautious about using a similar product.

The D163 might be an option, but I would really like a spray product. Getting anything from the Meguiars Mirror Glaze or Professional line is nearly impossible in Chattanooga, TN. All of the stores here carry the same 4-5 Mirror Glaze products and none of the Detailer line. I would have to order it online which is not out of the question just an inconvienience.

Any suggestions on an applicator when dealing with the millions of micro-grooves that are embossed into my tires. I having a really hard time getting any kind of dressing in to them.

I used to use Meguiar's Supreme Shine and found it turned my Michelins brown also, although Meguiars stated that this was normal "blooming" of a tire, and the brown is the chemicals leeching out to protect it from ozone, and Michelins were bad for turning brown....or something like that. In any event I tried Armor-All flat black tire spray foam and it is great. Makes the tires look new from the factory, no shiney/greasy/wet look, no greasy look, no sling, no fuss with a greasy applicator and above all...no brown. (odd that they don't turn brown with ArmorAll) Just spray on, walk away for a half hour, and then wipe excess off with a cloth. Lasts long too. WalMart has something similar in a white can with a tire on it. (can not remember the name) Same stuff basically but half the price of Armour All.

To me NOTHING is as good as M40, which actually has some impressive cleaning power to itself.

To get this finish does require some superb tire cleaning, but the slight sheen finish with the DARK black depth makes my mouth drool every time.

I was SOO Proud of these tires on the lawn you have NO IDEA:

            Re: Dressing tires

I personally like Black Magic which can be had for $10 in a value refill size.. (which lasts forever!!!) Then i pour some in a jar, and paint it on with a paintbrush... Then rub it in with a cloth. It really does a nice job.

You do get a little flick off after a stint on the highway, but nothing major. A QD wipe and you're all set.

It makes the tires look like a nice satin deep black.

You are the first person to say that ultimate black is shiny. It has almost no shine to it. Are you sure it is this one?

I did not say that Ultimate Black is shiny. I have never used it. I said "it sounds similar to a product that I have used before"

To ChristopherBrown and thedoc46....that is a very nice car, and very nice wheels on both posts. but I am sorry, to me those tires on both look shinny and greasy. I don't remember ArmorAll looking like that, (more like a flat deep black) but I will post a pic when I do my spring detail. Last time I used it was October last year. Whatever the case, it is what YOU like, and others peoples opinions are just that..opinions and preferences. I just happen to prefer no shine at all.

I love the look of M40, but it never lasts long for me. I like to use it to clean and condition on seals before using another product for protection.

Any sling is a deal breaker IMO. With the current crop of tire dressing products on the market these days tire sling should be a thing of the past.

Just because it sounds similar doesn't mean it looks the same. Give it a try. If you want shine then DUB or NXT tire shine would be what you want.

With D163 I prefer to use a cobra tire applicator or a carrand tire brush. It will get in between the various patterns on the tread. 1 coat will be a stain finish and 2 coats will add more gloss.

One coat of the ultmate black tire spray should give you the black clean non greasy look your going for. I have been using it for a while now and it does not attract dust. I spray it wait about 10 min or so then wipe off with a clean micro fiber. Says on the can to let it dry a while before driving.

Ultimate Black Tire Coat looks shiny when 1st applied, but the next day it's matte black.

@Christopher Brown. Those tires really do look great

I haven't tried any of meguiars aerosol type tire dressings, the tires shown in the 2 pics for me look just right. Seems to impart just enough sheen, just a bit more gloss than brand new tires. Before, I used mothers reflections tire dressing (nice product, not too messy), leaves a natural low gloss look. Now, I'm using a cheaper (but not a bad quality) tire dressing, seems to clean just a bit, also like the reflections I used to have, it has a natural low gloss finish. What brand? Microtex, I'm not sure of its availability in the US, but it is one of the most common brands here in the Philippines. They are known mostly for their selection of microfiber towels though. So far, so good..
