  • Chasing my tail on this!

Hello all, it has been a while! I have an issue that is driving me mad. I have picked up an unusual amount of oil or coolant or grime on my windshield and cannot rid myself of it! It is clear as glass until it gets wet and I use the wipers and it starts to smear. As of now, I have washed it, used cleaner, used dawn, and clayed..no use. What else can I safely use to try and get this off? As an aside, my windshield has a longitudinal crack, and whatever it is MAY be residing in the crack. The crack is open enough to hold water because you can watch it bleed out water after a wash. Wipers are new as well.

    Any ideas?

That is not an option at this time, otherwise I would. I am in college and funds are short, I already paid for this one from safe-lite that cracked a few months later.

Does the windshield have a warranty on it? If so .... If not, how about a vinegar/water 50/50 mixture.

I hadn't thought of that, maybe I will give that a go, just have to mind the trip. Pretty sure acetic acid will damage a plastic. The windshield had a warrant, but it was no use. I brought it to them and they found a microscopic defect BARELY visible to the naked eye and told me that was the culprit.

Have you considered that the product you are using to clean your windows is causing the problem...

I had a similar problem with my glass smearing all of the time. I would constantly clean it and the smears would reappear. It took me forever to figure out that it was the glass cleaner I was using causing the smears and not oil/dirt from the road. When I stopped using Windex and started using Invisible Glass by Stoner my problem vanished. At first it may take 3 or more cleanings with Invisible Glass to cut through all of your smears but once they are gone they stay gone. I also dumped out the windshield washer fluid and replaced it with Invisible Glass.

              Hope this helps

I'd be tempted to try some IPA - great at cleaning the wipers too.

Always clean ur wipers when cleaning the car for best results. They attract a lot of crud so that might be where ur problem is that's leaving streaks.

Try using rubbing alchol dont get it on the paint. First puit some on a paper towel folded small and rub it along your wipers it will get off allot of black stuff and they will work better. Then take a few more towels with alchol and go over the crack. Then clean towels with alchol over the whole windshield. It will leave the glass clean. Use ispiroal alchol the kind that you find in the store near band aids a higher % of alchol is better. I wold be suprised if that dosent work. I worked at a quick lube shop 13 years ago and this worked.

I keep a bottle of IPA on tap, and it did not work. My use of cleaner is stoners and megs off the shelf. Whatever it is is ON THERE good! Vinegar is next.

You may have to compound or polish it out.
