  • Bad water spots after Meguiars Synthetic Sealant 21 2.0

I decided to give my 2005 Jeep some long overdue TLC. I pulled things apart, clayed the whole Jeep, ran some 105/205 to get all paint back to new, then finished it with Meguiars Synthetic Sealant 21 2.0. I hate to cut quite a bit as the finish was pretty bad, but I got it looking like new again.

It was outside and got some overspray from my sprinkler system during a high wind day. It has water spots all over the hood again that are etched and need to be polished out again. I obviously can't keep polishing the Jeep every time water gets on it.

Am I doing something wrong? Isn't this instead of wax? I wiped it on using circular motion and let it sit for an hour then wiped it off. Did 2 coats. It looked fantastic until water got on it again. I figured it is my water but my wife's new Prius doesn't have any water spots on it.

FYI it was repainted in 2008 when it was wrecked. Not sure if this could have something to do with it.

Sorry I don't have pics of the water spots, but here it is during the "restoration". I'm currently deployed so I can't get new pics.

Sprinkler system water is really hard on a paint. It's typically loaded with minerals. That said I found #21 to not offer much in the way of keeping this kind of water spotting at bay. IME, their Ultimate Wax (also a sealant) does a better job and recently they have released "Paint Protect" that claims 365 day durability.

Hard water will spot. If you catch it early you can remove them. But it would be even better to not park near the sprinklers.

Is there anything I need to do to remove the 21 to apply a wax to prevent this? I'm guessing i'll need to polish these water spots out and try the wax. :/ I've already cut so much I don't want to keep cutting. Hopefully next time will work.

You will have to polish to remove M21. Even if you put a wax it will not prevent water spots from hard water. Sealants are more durable than waxes. Even a coating can get water spots.

Before you polish again why not try white vinegar on the water spots. Saturate a towel and place it on the water spots and let it sit for a few minutes. Vinegar will dissolve most mineral deposits and they may wipe off if they have not etched the paint.

                It's not the M21's fault.

As stated, sprinklers usually have very hard water....

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
