  • Detailing a Black Car

I detailed my dad's car last year for his birthday and I would get text messages months later about how great it still looked lol (my dad is the guy who washes his car and puts on Turtle Wax once every 2 years). Since he liked it so much, I decided I would do that again for him this year. He has a black Infinity that is several years old and has swirl marks throughout, but no other noticeable damage or marks. Here's the product lineup that I'm thinking about and wanted to get some opinions:

    1. wash
    2. clay bar
    3. Ultimate Compound
    4. Ultimate Polish
    5. Ultimate Paste Waste
    6. Gold Class Carnuba

Will this lineup provide optimal results as far as reducing the swirl marks and leaving a long-lasting shine? I don't want to overdo it and spend money and time that I don't need to, but I also want to do a really awesome job on his car. Any thoughts are appreciated!

That is a winning combination to use on any color.
It is what I use on my black grand prix. I follow up with washes and Megs Ultimate quik wax.(soon to be D156).
Buy him some Ultimate quik wax too for the upkeep washes

I'd probably stay with ult wax for durability sake.

Or that new 365 if it comes out in time for you

That sounds like a good plan. You didn't tell us if you're working by hand or machine?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks for all of the replies! Davey, I've got an orbital buffer that I plan on using. I've not used one before but it has to beat the heck out of doing all this by hand, which is what I've done in the past. Last year I did clay bar, UC, Ultimate Polish, and the black wax all by hand and it turned out pretty decent, though I continued to see more swirl marks than I had hoped. I'm hoping using the orbital buffer will help more with that with the UC application, and I read about people getting great results with the combination of UW and Gold Class Carnuba. If there's not a noticeable difference with adding the Gold Class Carnuba, though, I'd save my money and just do UW.

Save some time and skip swirl remover. UC/UP can accomplish the task.

You have a solid plan. Ultimate wax will last longer than black wax. You could just do 2 coats of UW and call it a day as UW looks good on black. UW topped with a carnauba (M26 or GC) does look great. The difference is subtle. If you don't tell him he won't notice.

Hey angelsong, what orbital have you got, 6'' or 10''?

And to make it work better for your cleaning step with the UC, you need to use the foam bonnet. So pick you up 2 to 3. Also just like with foam pads you need to prime and apply 3 to 4 pea size drop on the first couple applications then only 3 drops. On these bonnets it's very important not to over saturate!

Also clean your bonnet on the fly with a terry towel after every couple applications of product. And use micro fiber bonnets for Ultimate Polish, and for you LSP and/or another clean foam. Used a 6'' & 10'' orbital for years and learned few techniques to making them work alittle better

I've got a 6" from Harbor Freight (Wilmar or Ryobi, I think). Any particular foam bonnets you use and recommend? I have been on the verge of hacking the cheap orbiter with industrial-strength velcro so that I can use the regular Meguiar's polishing pads (though those are 3x the price...). I appreciate the tip on the terry towel too. Anything to make this easier and less frustrating is great!

And thanks, Guz, you reaffirmed what I read about not needing ScratchX if you use UC/UP! I appreciate it.
