  • Please Help Me! Paint Chip Problems. :c

I have a large paint chip on the side of my 2014 Toyota Corolla. It was accidental, as I was too close to a parking garage pillar and it left three chips, but only two are very visible. I've cleaned them and painted them with duplicolor touch up paint, and it seems to decrease how noticeable it is, but during sunny days and up close it's very noticeable. I have no idea how to wet sand, and I would rather not, I've never done anything like that before. Also, since I followed the instructions on the duplicolor video on youtube, (they made it themselves, as in from their company not from a random person.) it left a very unsightly rectangle of clear coat! How can I get rid of that, and fix the chip without wet sanding. I used the Meguire's scratchx 2.0 and it worked wonders on the scratches, and I used the ultimate compound also from Meguire's, since the turtle wax rubbing compound to decrease a paint chip, and it left a dull spot, but the product returned the shine.

Anyways is there any product that could help me with this problem, also I apply the products by hand, I don't have any fancy tools :c

A photo would help a lot.

So the original clear coat around the chip was damaged from the repair? Did you wetsand the touched up area?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I'll try and post a photo soon, I can't right now since I'm at work. I haven't tried wet sanding, I'm a bit scared to try that...
I'm not too great on cars, so I don't know if the original clear coat was damaged, I just followed instruction in the duplicolor video, and I thought clear coat would dry clear, not a clear rectangle over the touched up scratch.

Not thinking to hard on this one, I would duplicate the repair in the trunk somewhere and try wet sanding.
I wet sanded on the crown between the front grills of my bumper after touch up paint. There was a scuff from the previous owner.
I carefully smoothed it with 2500 then used Ultimate polish. The hardest part was knowing when to stop. The fresh paint disappears rather quickly.
Personally I am a wuss when it comes to wet sanding and always start with a high number grit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Not perfect by any means but a lot less noticeable.

I'm still a bit scared to wet sand, but I'm willing to give it a try. What's the highest grit wet sanding paper that will work well? It's a pretty shallow chip, just a bit large in size, about the half the size of a dime. Please recommend a brand of sandpaper as well as how do I sand without going too deep?

          [Edit]

Also, I wanted to ask, if it's alright to just use the ultimate compound after wet sanding without a polisher? I don't have one, and I can't afford to buy one.

Oreillys would have some paper. I usually have 2000 and 2500 as my highs. You can polish it out rather easy.

Honestly to solve your paranoia, find a piece of metal( an old pan or ??) and duplicate the spot repair and experiment.

Dawn soap in water for lubrication, letting the paper soak until it curls. Fold it into roughly a 3x3 or 4x4 square and use your fingers to massage it lightly vertically then horizontally.
Wipe it dry and inspect your work. Repeat until you are content. You can always repeat the process after polishing if you aren't happy.
Also when it is time for the car spot, tape it off as close as possible.

You are trying to feather and blend the spot, then polishing to even it out.
            Hopefully the gurus pipe in.

Do it by hand on that small of a spot......I would.

Thank you for the help, I'll try and post a picture of what I've done in terms of touch up paint. I'll go and try that out.

My friend has lent me this turtle wax scratch repair kit, and it has three sand paper like things, would those work for wet sanding?

A quick looksie on that Google gives it mostly positive vibes.
I couldn't find the grit of the paper anywhere, except they were coded.
It looks like it has lube spray for the pads instead of the dawn water, paper routine.
To what degree it will work I am not sure. You would have to read some reviews and decide.
                Good luck
