  • Clay bar turning pink?? Never seen this before

Recently picked up a 1987 Porsche 928. The paint is very tired, feels like sand paper.
The previous owner had the car about 15 years and put about 10k miles on it.

I gave it a good sudsy wash with Meguiar's Super Soap using filtered, softened water.

After drying it off and feeling how rough the surface is I figured a clay bar treatment was needed ASAP using Last Touch mixed 50/50.

Much to my surprise, the blue clay is turning pink. I thought maybe it could be from the last touch (since it's pink) so I switched to Nano Skin Glide which is blue. Nope, still turned the clay pink.

Any ideas? Could it be the paint it so dry it absorbed some Super Soap (which is bright pink) and the clay is pulling it out??

I'm thinking of using the Nano Skin for the rest of the car instead of a clay bar. Since it feels so bad (worst I've come across) I initially thought the clay would be better.

        Is this maybe paint overspray?

I think we have a winner. Not sure why this didn't occur to me before, probably because of the pink soap and pink detailing spray sent my thoughts in the wrong direction.

I cannot see a difference before / after even with my halogen light. Oh well, it's coming off easy enough. I'm going to re-wash the car using the Nano Skin to get it all off.

Paint overspray is the most likely answer here. You can't see it on the car unless it's crazy heavy, but it will definitely show up on the clay. A couple of years ago we had a car brought in to a TNOG session (Tommy's blue Lexus IS-F) and the right front corner felt rough but the rest of the paint was smooth as glass. Tommy asked what it was and the obvious answer was "bonded contaminants". Really, without seeing whatever it was actually fall on the car and stick to it, all you can do is classify the roughness as generic bonded contaminants. But when we started rubbing the white clay bar over the blue paint, it started turning red. I asked him what he had spray painted recently and it all came rushing back to him! Yep, he had done a little rattle can project in his garage a week or so prior, with red paint of course, and forgot all about it. He didn't put 2 and 2 together until the clay came up red.

By the way...... absolutely fantastic car! A neighbor of mine recently picked up one in the same color but in far worse shape, from an estate sale. He got it super cheap, which means he'll likely pay a fortune to get it road worthy again.

Agreed! Always loved the 928's myself. I'm actually hoping they recreate a modern 928 sometime soon.

I re-washed the car using M62 and a nano-skin mit instead of a regular microfiber one.

The paint is nice and smooth now. It needs a good polish and sealant, but looks pretty good at the moment.

I also have an 81 that is supercharged and a 79 that is stripped down for track duty.

I'm 50/50 on that subject. What made the 928 special was being the first "clean sheet" design from Porsche that started back in 1971. Any "modern" 928 will be based on some other chassis platform, shared engine etc.... It may look like a modern 928, but spiritually it will fall short to me.

Here is an updated all washed up photo with a different set of wheels I had in storage. The front end is still sitting high in these photos, it takes a few miles for the front suspension to "settle".

                  That's an awesome looking car.

I was looking at buying one myself a little while ago. I'm still thinking about it...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
