  • Oxidation on Rubber Weather Stripping

    Hey guys,

I just helped my girlfriend purchase a 2012 Hyundai Elantra and she really likes the car so far. I've noticed that the weather stripping is covered in little white dots that appears to be oxidation IMO. I've tried using a tooth brush to clean the stripping with regular acp, lexol vinyl/rubber cleaner, rubbing compound, bleache white, and greased lightning and nothing seems to work at all. I'm pretty much a weekend warrior at this point so any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ryne

Do you have any photos to see what you are working with?

Doesn't look like oxidation to me, & the dots are on the paint too in the bottom photo. Could be someone spilled something on those parts, or maybe overspray from a spray bottle. Have you tried cleaning them off the paint? If they come off there then I'd use the same or a similar product on the black. Maybe a light polish on the paint, something like Meg's ultimate polish; on the black I'd work gently using a MF pad or towel.

It appears to be underneath the coating. Are these plastic or rubber?

They are rubber. All of the rubber and vinyl trim looks similar to the pic above.

It looks like the top clear is starting to fade, or a lamination that is on it. A little temporary fix is just Meguiar's Black Restoration. If Meguiar's Black Restoration didn't do anything, other than just being oily on top then it is possible that the thing has a laminate on top, and that the thing is starting to lift up.

Yeah I think someone spilled or sprayed something on it. I agree with the ultimate black. If that don't work u could always tape off and give it a light coat of paint. Duplicolor and sem make specialty paint for rubber and vinyl. But use this as a last resort. But my vote is ultimate black. See what else others chime in with.

I was going to suggest a cleaner like M39 or even D101 to try and clean them or even Mothers Heavy Duty Trim Cleaner. But it looks like you've thrown almost everything at them.

Try using Ultimate Black. The plastic may be dry and could use some restoring. I that doesn't help then it is more than likely under some sort of coating on the rubber.
