  • help!

I have a new Mazdaspeed MX-5 velocity red. I washed it, clayed it , used some scratch X o it [ minor imperfections] and NXT wax.
The car still feels gritty, any sugestions?

    Thanks,

    AC

I would experiment on a small area, 1’x1’ or so, to try to find what works before proceeding to the rest of the car.

Did you clay the whole car lightly or did you lay into it a bit? Sometimes you have to clay with a bit of passion to get the surface clear.

Can you see the gritty specks? Do you have a magnifier you can use to inspect the finish? Do they look like drops of sap? Splats of tar? You might try bug and tar remover or some type of solvent based cleaner.

For something really nasty like dried concrete dust the aggressive C-2100 clay might do the job but it will swirl the finish and require subsequent polishing.

      Hey,

Just to add to PC's comments, I would avoid the C-2100 "Aggressive" Clay unless you are experienced in using a rotary buffer or at the very least very experienced with using the DA Polisher for swirl removal.

I agree with PC that you need to work the Quik Clay or the C-2000 Mild Detailing Clay over a given area. You should be able to "feel" the paint become perfectly smooth under the clay. Make sure you use plenty of lubricant while claying.

      Please keep us posted!

New Car + Gritty Feeling = Rail Dust

I hate rail dust! I have had it on my last 4 new cars! I should not complain though because the dealer did not attempt to remove it with an aggressive compound and a rotary! They left it for me to remove which turned out to be the best solution.

Meguair's Quick Clay, Clay Magic, or Mother's Clay Bar should take care of the problem. If the clay drags on the surface and smears, you are not using enough lube. The Clay Magic and Mothers come with lube. For the Meguairs use Final Inspection or Quik Detailer for lube, they work equally well.

Tim, I never tried the aggressive Overspray Clay. Does it leave swirl marks? What kind of contaminants is it normally used on?

          Thanks for the info.!

I will re-clay the car and use crystal polish as well, I don't think I was useing enough lube the first time.

Concrete dust? That's a horror I've not experienced yet! How does that get on a car? I hope not from road construction! There is too much around here to avoid, but most of it is asphalt, as it keeps the unions busy with constant maintenance it requires.

My friend has it on his 2500 Ram (black of course). It looks like mud splatter, but it don't come off like mud splatter!!! He's tried almost everything.
