  • Splotchy finish!

So I finally got around to doing my first real detail this year. I washed with gold class soap, hand dry, clayed with the meguiars kit. Everything looked great. I went over it again the next day with regular quik detailer (maroon bottle), still looked great, I didn't notice anything.

Then a few days later I had time to wax finally. For wax spreading, I use a turtle wax random orbital from Walmart for like $20 with a yellow foam (sponge-like) material pad, and ULW. Spread it on sections at a time, wipe off by hand with microfiber. It used to turn out great, but the last 2 years have been an issue.

I'm not even 100% sure it's the wax step, only 95%, because I don't notice it until I do wax. I thought it might've been my wash routine for my cloths, but I just used dawn as many recommended this time.

It turns out all splotchy, like dark areas and light areas that look like they got little to no wax coverage... Even though I go over the entire car. What am I doing wrong?

Kind of hard to see it between the cloud pattern in the last one, but the first two are clear as day.

After you wash and clay the car, wash the car again to remove any remaining clay residue.

Usually a dark area is a little too much wax.

With the ULW, it usually fades soon, or when QD/UW after a day or two.

Sometimes you get familiar with a product and start adding a little extra to the surface...

          Common issue with ULW.

Applying too thick can cause the streaks you're experiencing, but unfortunately (with UW) sometimes they can even occur if you're applying thin.

Lucky it's easily fixed by spraying a very fine mist of water onto a MF towel and doing a final buff that way. Another way to prevent it is to apply wax to a couple of panels at a time, then buff off those couple of panels within 5 minutes. As opposed to the traditional method of applying to the whole car and then buffing off the whole car. UW is the only Megs wax that can be used this way.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
