  • Question concerning the use of the DA Microfiber pads/system

I recently purchased the DA Microfiber system (cutting/finishing pads and compounds). I have a Meguiars G100 DA that's probably 9 years old but hasn't been used to work on maybe more than 5-6 vehicles in that time. I use it for personal use only. My issue is I've tried twice now to use the DA Microfiber Cutting Disc (DMC5) along with D300 and the G100 barely spins the disc, heats up very quickly, and begins to smoke. This has happened twice now in a few days. I've resorted to having to simply use Ultimate Compound along with Meguiars backing plate and 7" Soft Buff W8207B yellow pad which gives me no issues of bogging, heat, or smoke from the G100.
Does the design/application of the Microfiber System pads along with the D300 product put more strain on the DA motor as opposed to UC and the Softbuff pads I've used for years? When I'm using the DA microfiber pads, I'm not putting any undo pressure on the pads. It simply bogs down almost immediately when I put the pad on my vehicle and start it up. It may be that the motor in my machine is wearing out and can't handle the application but I just want to get some input before I look at having to purchase another machine. Is there that big of a difference in these 2 different products and applications that it affects the G100 that much?
I'm getting decent results from the UC but I know I could get so much more with the microfiber system. I appreciate any help anyone could provide. I'm in no way knocking the product. I simply want to resolve this issue and get the full benefit and results I know it's capable of producing.

Hmm... I've never heard of this before.

So there is smoke coming out of the DA motor? That would indicate to me that your DA is on the way out, but I don't see why it wouldn't happen with foam pads.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Yes, both times I've been able to use the foam pads and UC with no issues.

Are you using the same backing plate?

If not, are you sure the BP is not hitting the housing on the DA...is the compression washer on the BP?

        Just ideas...

Are you using a small gage extension cord? Might want try using a larger gage cord. Also be sure the fiber washer is on the backing plate spindle. FWIW, I've used an old G100 with the MF pads without issue.

Yes, same backing plate. Compression washer, not sure what that is. I will have to look at it when I get home. It's a brand new plate right out of the package so it should be good. It works fine using the same backing pad and yellow foam pad.

No, I'm using a very large gauge cord and using the same cord for the MF pads as I am with Soft Buff pads which don't seem to be giving me a problem. I'll have to check on the fiber washer. What exactly is this washer and what's the purpose of it? If it's missing, would a fiber washer cause the issues I'm having?

This is the compression washer. It sits on top of the backing plate.

Good articles on why it's used.
The Compression Washer I wrote an article about Compression Washers explaining how important it is to the function of DA Polishers here, Don't use you

Don't use your polisher without it! That is... the Compression Washer If you don't use a compression washer, the rivets on the backing plate attachmen

THANKS to those that replied and offered advice. You guys nailed it. It WAS the compression washer. I checked the backing pad and there was no washer. Luckily I purchased 2 backing pads and the unopened one still had a washer on it. I put it on along with the MF pads and it runs as smooth as silk. I did a small section on my hood and it worked perfectly.

                      Good deal!

Now when ya get a chance, take a run to your local hardware store and get another (or two) washer. Just look for a nylon washer the size of the washer you have. Check out the plumbing stuff, that's where I find one I needed.

Just DO NOT use a metal washer!

I plan on doing that. I will make sure I have these on hand from now on. I had no idea that small little part could affect he machine that dramatically.
