  • clear coat failing, to preserve remaining paint?

If you had a car with clear coat failure beginning, and you don't plan on repainting it, what steps should be taken to preserve the remaining clear coat/paint?

I would assume no more buffing is recommended, but are their any specific products for this? just to keep it from getting much worse?

Keep a coat of wax on it. Definitely avoid any polishing or compounding.

^^ that plus M7 can keep it looking better for a little while...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I wonder if a coating (eg Opti coat) would help?

Probably not. Depending on how the clear is failing it will most likely continue to fail and take the coating along with it. Often times the clear starts to delaminate from the color coat and once that starts, nothing is going to stop it. The failure is where these two layers come together, so applying something on top won't stop it. In other situations a coating may help, even if only to slow down the spread of damage. Clear coat can fail in different ways, hence the potential hit and miss of stopping the spread.
