Is this sun damage, oxidation, or something else?

Hi all,

I looked at one of the other links in the thread with sun damage and I just need somebody to confirm how bad it is for my silver hood:



I checked the roof, trunk, and remaining panels and none of them have anything like this. Are there any products that could help repair this, or will I need to have the hood repainted? For reference, this is the hood of a 2000 BMW that has 140k miles.

Welcome to MOL!

We hate to say this, especially since this is your first post here, but that is most definitely a clear coat failure situation and the only real fix is to have the hood stripped and repainted. Anything else that you try may or may not make it look better to some degree, but that improvement is going to be very short lived. Even a full compound, polish and wax is only going to improve the appearance for a few weeks at best, and likely even less time than that.

Thank you for responding to my inquiry! The rest of the body panels do not show any damage like above; what is recommended to help delay any further sun/UV damage?

I feel you on this. My car has 2 spots on the rear bumper with clear coat failure. Although my car is 15 years old. The California sun and all UV's are very tough on cars. I agree with C8N and Michael.

This should give you an idea of what we deal with out here on the west coast.
