  • is oil layer from wax job removed after washing car, is wax protection still there?

    Hi Guys,

sorry for the lengthy post here but just like to get some wash and wax basics, facts and detail right as these have been bogging me for quite a while. I like to check a few questions:

For past years, after i wash my car, i would apply Ultimate Quick Wax or Ultimate wax for protection. And you know that after the wax job, you run your fingers on the paintwork and there is this 'just waxed' feel whereby you can feel the "OIL" (or whatever correct term that is).

So as per standard protocol to wash the car frequently i try to wash it weekly. I notice that after drying my car, the "oily" feel is no longer there- and you have to quick wax it to get back the feel. Last time i thought that it is due to me using little shampoo dilution to skimp/or that its car wash soap and not the 'wash and wax' type. or simply cos i am not using a good premium car wash shampoo.

So....our current family car is about 6 years old car and last Ultimate wax done was about a few months back. Recently i went to an industrial area which was providing car wash. those really normal type. As the rate was fairly cheap, i decided to go for it. they hi-jet the car and foam up the entire car and wash down. I did not opt for any polish or wax treatment after that. What surprises me is that the next day i ran my fingers to the paintwork i felt the 'oil' feel. So i thought to myself...is this the kind of feel that one should have if you have washed your car properly, or used a good Wash & Wax Shampoo !? hhmmmmmm..... . So recently I have the opportunity to get a new car (alongside with the old one); since its a new car i decided to do some research (Meguair forums, reviews, youtubes, etc) to learn from basic Again and wash car right. Do the correct dilution, etc). i really took the effort to get measuring device for both the soap and the water.

So for my new car, i stocked NXT wash shampoo and Ultimate Wash and Wax. After i got my new car i washed with NXT..no 'oil' feel after wash..its okay i thought ..as it is not a wash and wax shampoo. Next I waxed with Ultimate Wax for a good seal' A week later, i used Ultimate Wash and Wax with the thoughts that i would get the 'oil' feel just like the cheap car wash i had with my old car. To my suprise and abit of dismay there isnt any and it feels squeaky to the touch (hope my english is correct, squeaky is the feeling when you wash your water glass and it clean feel. (please read on further for my afterthoughts on UWW, dont judge me or what i said about UWW specific at this point as i am not running down UWW)

So i thought; 1) its a new car 2) i have used Ultimate Wax on it which for those who have read or know its a sealant and suppose to last longer than Carnuba 3) I used UWW which is suppose to be the top of line. Why no 'oil' feel after washing?

Initially i was abit disappointed with UWW but i went back and read this thread

i came to realise 1) seems that i am not the only one who feel that Wash and Wax shampoo dont give much wax - which also sounds logic from an engineering/logic point of view. 2) After reading it i came to also realise that using UWW seems to really clean the car well (i not sure whether is it cos not much dirt have accumulated) and that there might be some truth that low water beading does not necessarily mean no/low protection (based on the write ups in the link).
(Hope there will be a day i get to use NXT or UWW on a dirty car and maybe i can comment more)

So I have a few questions which I hope someone can help to enlighten:

    1) Is it a norm for the paint to lose the 'wax oil feel' after a wash? If i just use a wash and wax shampoo (Without spray wax), does the initial wax protection which was applied a week ago still there despite the 'no wax' feel?

    2) Would i actually have more protection due to the 'oil' if i had not washed my car? Does the 'oil' help to protect the paint? or is it the wax part which have cured?

    3) Why does the 'cheap' car wash able to leave the 'oil' feel to my old car? is it because they using snow foam wash? or do i need to leave the UWW shampoo abut longer on the car before rinsing off?

    Thanks for your time.
