  • I've hit a roadblock...

So it's day 2. Half of the car has been compounded with ultimate results. Clayed the driver side & trunk to start today, primed a brand new Orange pad and decided to grab the bull by the horns and take a stab at the repainted side aka the imperfect side of my car and it's not cooperating.. Long story short, when given a close look, the clearcoat is "funky" to begin with. Certain parts on this side almost look painted on with a steaky almost paintbrush look to the clearcoat.. It's not really noticeable unless you look closly, but it's quite odd looking. Even Jason Rose wasn't totally sure what the heck had happened in the small spot I asked him about.. He said it looked almost as if wet sanding had taken place, but also the clear might be really thin. He advised me to be carefull with whatever I decide to do here.. And sure enough, the moment I feared is here. This portion of the paint is why I wanted no part of the MF detailer system.. And while this is actually just a small portion of the quarter panel, and just below this I was able to correct about 80% of the swirls after 3 passes with moderate/heavy pressure, after the 3rd pass on this section, it actually became worse._. I'm talking gnarly swirls. Looks almost like "chickenwire" swirls! It's crazy.. I'm not only stumped, but for the moment, it's zapped whatever energy I had, plus the suns out now, and I'm venting.

I could use a doctor, a paint Dr. I wish I was in Irvine, doing this next to pros who've seen this b4.

Just look at this.. Dull & Discouraged. I'm not even sure if I should compound this side at the moment. Sorry for the long post. End of rant.

That 1st pic does it no justice. It looks worse irl. Like someone took a brillo pad to it or something wild.

Aliens might have driven this Cadillac on Mars at 1 point. And took it to their neighborhood automatic carwash b4 returning it to earth...

This is the trunklid just next to that spot. All I've done is clayed this part. But at least it's normL.

What have you used on this spot? Compound? Polish?

Just Ultimate Compound w/orange pad so far...

Update: Since it's Sunday, and I'm not in Irvine, and Mr. Stoops is not going to magicly appear on my driveway, on his day off to offer protips and cheer me up and make it all better, I reached for the next best thing. Ice cream. Yes, if ice cream doesn't cheer you up, at least a lil bit, then you may as well be dead right? Lol

As I took the 1st sip of my vanilla shake I had a moment of clarity.. It's like the paint gods spoke into my ear.. I think it was the voice of Stoops. It said "the polish, Use The Polish"!
Then it was clear as white. White shake, White pad, Ultimate Polish is, it's White! Ahh yes, what would Stoops do? The paint gods have spoken. They even brought back some shade..

Thank you. I Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday. Good luck

          Re: I've hit a roadblock...

I was just about to say to use UP and see if that works better. Well it sounds like you figured it out and that it worked out.

On paper, yes. In reality however I decided to continue compounding. But I made a rookie mistake, and it could prove costly, as I wasted a bunch of time by not sticking to proper technique and I somehow spent way too much time on the trunklid wondering why I couldn't remove minor swirls.. I finally fixed my blunder, but time is so costly and now I'm really wishing I had worked in sections, as my plans for a 3 step polish are ticking away. It's 4pm and I need a near miracle to finish 3/4 of the car. I've already put off the drivers side for another day... The whole passenger side is in prime condition. The hood is about 70% defect free [sun is now making it impossible to work on right now]

Plus it's a Caddy, so it's sort of large to begin with. Ehh noob mistake... I need to grub too. It's all good I suppose. Could be worse
Thx for the good advice though all this, Guz. :thumbsup.

My mistake was placing my right hand near the rear of the polisher and therefore preventing proper rotation of the pad. Once I corrected that, and placed both hands where they should be, things worked much better & faster. [that doesn't include the small section in OP. That section really is an oddball deal]

@Jarhead. In the 1st pic, notice there's no detail in the reflection of the led light. Compared to the 2nd pic, from a different section, where you can see every bulb in full detail.

Passenger side is completly done now. Only did white pad polish. Hood has been compounded to the max, but no polish yet. Same for the trunk. I'm exhausted, I'm gonna go get me a couple Monsters now. Lol.

                        Re: I've hit a roadblock...

Wow! You talk a lot about food Eldorado2k, that's not good to hear because I am a foodie and I am hungry right now lol.

                        (all joking aside)

I can't really tell what your talking about in your pictures. However, i do read that you say your vehicle has been repainted, so that leads me to think with your problems (just thinking out loud since I haven't seen the paint) Maybe it was painted over the defects? As in the vehicle wasn't prepped properly prior to shooting clear coat? So that is why you keep seeing these defects?

Somewhat hard to explain through the forum.. (so sorry about that)

How big is this section that you are talking about? I am assuming the drivers side?

In the End if I were you I would just listen to what Jason Rose suggested.
