  • Fixing paint chip with some rust

I have a paint chip on my wife's car that seems to be developing some specks of rust. The chip seems to be pretty deep, so I wondered if it remove the 'primer'. I was going to just do a touch-up paint using the manufacturer's touch-up that I got from amazon.com, but now I wonder if I should do something first about the rust.

How would you recommend dealing with this ? Should I just go ahead and apply touch-up paint? Should I use something like this Rust Away from paintscratch.com? or will drcolorchip work for something like this ? Any other recommendation ?

Note that I don't have any experience with this kind of stuff. I want to make the result as good as possible but I also realize that may require considerable skill and experience, which I don't have. (My experience so far has only been in claybar, compound, polish, wax with a DA).

This is the touch-up paint I already have BTW. Picture of the chip, which is on the gas tank cover is below. Or is it possible to just replace the whole gas-tank cover (it's a honda civic 2013) ? Thank you in advance for any help.

They sell fiberglass brushes you can use to remove the rust by working it in the chip, and any loose edges. Then clean out with some alcohol, and let dry.

If you use what you have, you can do a pretty good job. Just dont try to make a blob. Use a toothpick, and just put a thin coat, and let it sit. Then do another thin coat. Then another....until the chip is fairly level. And it will be pretty good.

      Hi Murr,
Okay, I never heard of fiberglass brushes. Did you mean something like this ? Can I find this in a local hardware store (e.g. home depot / lowe's) or autozone ? I was also thinking to get the Langka system / blob eliminator. I don't know if that'd worth it.

      Thank you for your suggestion.

Locktight has a rust converter spray, tape the area off real good, sand and spray.

And you don't need any special brushes.
Get some wetsanding paper with a sticky back, put a piece on a pencil eraser and give it a few swipes.
