Here's my quick journey of cleaning a spot on my headliner which I hope helps someone else eventually.
I bought a 2011 Honda CR-V a few days ago, overall it's clean for its age and only has minor blemishes you'd expect on a daily driven car. I am slowly getting it up to my standards as much as possible with the weather being uncooperative right now. One tiny issue turned into a big one. There was a small spot on the headliner, about 1" x 1", it looked like makeup or something. I very light dampened a mf and blotted it and it disappeared easily, but then it dried and I was left with a very ugly brownish thin ring in the area. I tried using oxiclean to only have it turn the area really white when it dried, then things got frustrating. Despite not wanting to use a upholstery cleaner I've had a lot of luck in the past with a particular product called oxy power out. I sprayed it on a rag and again dabbed the area, still not much progress. So I sprayed the foam on an mf and dabbed the foam around the ring and used a light straight line motion with the detachable brush which wasn't very hard. After a few minutes and after drying it seems I was successful removing the brown ring, with little to no oxiclean white residue left. It may need a touch up but being around the handle I bet this area will see it's share of dirt buildup over time.
My advice, never use a damp rag on a headliner, or you will end up with the same issue. I wish I had skipped straight to the upholstery cleaner and light brush, with light blotting action afterwards. I would have saved a ton of time.
