  • RainX Anti-fog

My friend is currently visiting Toronto and will be returning to his home town on Sundays (about 4 hrs drive) He just told me there is something wrong with his car and no heat comes out. I am concerned that with no heat, the car will fog up and this would impact visibility. Local daytime temp is 0-2c.

I happen to have a bottle of RainX Anti-fog in my basement. Would this work to minimize fog for a car with no heat?

I tried the anti-fog many years back, in a word...nope.

If anything, the 'fog' seemed worse.

I think my dad used it once many yrs ago, but he had heat to work with the antifog .....pretty sure the interior fogging is a result of the moisture in his breath.
Likely other than fixing the heater, he will have to drive with the windows opened, wear warm clothes and tough it out.

what you need to do is equalize the temperature from outside and inside, You can turn the fan on for your heater, you can crack a couple of windows open.

Another option would be to buy a portable hairdryer with the 12 v plug? Heard these might blow a fuse in the car though..?

Your friend would be better off going to CDN tire and getting a 15 dollar 12 volt heater that plugs into his lighter

Tell him to check and make sure there is antifreeze in the rad. You need it to flow through the heater core to get heat. Could be a lot of things but low coolant is a cheap fix. 4 hours in a car at -2 is no fun and RainX is garbage in my opinion.

Also possibly a thermostat that is stuck open so the coolant won't get a chance to warm up

              Thanks for your replies.
Problem is more than just low coolant. He told me he added coolant 1-2 weeks ago. He would like to get it fixed in his home town.
The best bet is the 12v heater in the car. Hope it is safe and won't blow a fuse...

If he had to add coolant, he has a leak.

Certainly. Adding coolant is just a workaround. The leak has to be identified and fixed.
