  • How Much Liquid Wax To Use?

I have a six inch random orbital buffer and either use too much liquid wax or sometimes too little. I can't seem to guage how much to use per panel or per whatever. Yes I already perused a plethera of waxing videos here and on YouTube.

I have been using the liquid wax that comes with the Meguiar's Clay Kit. I just don't know how to ascertain when it is time to add more wax to the pad. Or if there is a general rule about how much to use per square foot of panel then that would work also. Thanks!

as little as possible! If there's wax coming off of the pad onto the paint your fine. people use way too much product. the car I did I probably use about a quarter ounce for the whole thing barely saw any wax on the car when I wiped it off

Of course I prefer to use as little as possible but am not sure how to guage that. I can't really tell when wax is being applied at times is probably what my issue is. So I need something like x amount of wax on the pad should cover x amount of square footage of a panel.

Basically, wax (any wax/sealant) should be applied real thin, so thin that it's barely visible. There's no real way to measure how much wax to use, it's a moving target. You adjust as you go, sometimes as you go along, you'll notice that even if you apply a certain amount of wax only intended for 1 panel, you'll be surprised that you'll actually still be able to wax another 1-1.5 panels.

YOu definately want to apply this stuff thin. If you think you are missing spots, Just go over it again after you finish buffing vehicle.

I wouldn't use no more the 1 oz.

If the panel looks like old school wax when done applying. YOu applied way too much.

Or put this in mind: If you think you applied too much product, you most probably have. Whisper thin is the way to go. You'll have less issues when any product (megs, collinite, etc.) if the wax is applied super thin.

I'm not using a 1000-watt halogen and so I can't really tell where the wax is applied when it's really really thin. One time I waxed my windows like a dork following some other detailer but what I noticed was I could see there was still a lot of wax being applied then. Then another time I thought I did real good with a thin coat but then noticed that the finish wasn't as shiny where it was laid down thin. So in that case was probably too little wax.

                    Exactly.

And go over each section like 3 or 4 times to really spread it out thin and even.

Re: How Much Liquid Wax To Use?

It's really just about applying as little wax as possible. There is no fixed formula or amount of wax to use. If one feels like the wax isn't applied sufficiently, then by all means just reapply another super thin barely visible coat of wax. Like meguiars states, apply another coat to ensure even coverage. You adjust as you go.

It's better to apply too little product than to apply too much. When you apply too little product, you don't waste it and the margin for error is a lot bigger. If you apply too much, you waste product and the margin for error is a lot smaller. Think Collinite 476s (or any old fashioned hard carnauba paste) wax or products like Klasse Sealant Glaze or Carlack 68 long life sealant. If you apply too little, sure, there may be a bit of unevenness. Just remove it and reapply another super thin coat. You apply it too much, you waste a lot of product, it would be a lot harder to remove and you may get smearing since haze time is affected by the thickness of the wax applied.

These are good tips to lead me in the right direction. Thanks for your input.

Great! Just enjoy the detailing/waxing, this activity is something to be enjoyed. Just remember the thin, thin, thin application of wax/sealants. You'll realize it isn't too complicated and you'll find that you'll become a lot more economical. And if you're using Ultimate Liquid, yes, you'll have a harder time seeing that wax you applied, thanks to that thin film technology.

Went over my Jeep Liberty real quick yesterday with a DA, 6.5" Beige Finishing pad, only had to apply product to the pad 4 times to do the whole thing.... Very typical applying with a DA for me.

And that's with M26 on an SUV...

And it comes off so easy.
