  • Quick cleanup for special occasion, involves carbon vinyl stripes

    Hey guys,

I've offered to clean up a car which was the pride and joy of the collection of many cars belonging to my sister in law who passed this week. Being stored in a rural farming location her cars never really get a clean outside of the local city carwash, so in an ideal, ideal, ideal world I'd devote at least the weekend to her, but as the funeral is in a couple of days, and as you can imagine I'm pretty flat out, that's not going to happen..

My main concern is the carbon striping... any suggestions?

My plan of attack at this stage was the usual cleaning drill... maybe clay her, and then I thought I'd Ultimate Polish/Wax combo, taking care around all the striping, and maybe use UQD/UQW or Gold Class on the areas with striping... The wheels should be pretty easy to clean... they are a nice shape factory alloy, and don't have a lot of brake dust... so I thought I'd All Wheel or Aluminium Wheel (depending on what I have left) and Endurance Gel the tires...

Well, in the end I spent about 3.5 hours in the early evening doing the whole wash-clay through to ULW phase, and an hour in the morning doing a spray wipe and carnauba wax application... Considering I didn't have the time (and experience/confidence) to do a swirl removal, I'm pretty happy with the results considering the dulled, swirled state of the paint, and on close inspection there is some very obvious respraying going on.. As I said to my mrs, there are two sorts of loved car out there, and this is the sort that isn't loved by being locked up, or spends it's time out in public displays.... Stone chips all over the lower body, even all over the number plates... This car has had it's loving via the foot pedal, and club runs...... so overall, I was fairly happy with the end result... The phone camera photo isn't the best, but the yellow is certainly a lot brighter and shinier now..

Must have kept the extended family fairly happy... I've been asked to cleanup the Porsche Cayman S out at the farm, so it can be sold....

Sorry to hear of your sister in laws passing.

It sure looks like this MR2 came out quite nice - the yellow really is a lot brighter now and the car looks ready for it's next club run in honor of your sister in law.

We're sure you'll do an equally nice job on the Cayman and look forward to seeing some pix of that car, too.
