I never steam cleaned an engine before. I usually take it to the self wash or wipe it down. Has anyone steam cleaned there engine before if so what kind said you use.

Re: question about steam cleaning engines
Are you actually talking about a decent sized fuel fired steamer, or a vapor unit? I've done both.
The vapor unit is obviously much easier to avoid electronics, etc, but might as well use a hand scrub brush with the car wash sprayer. The larger units (mine is only 1000 psi, but has about a 350000 btu burner, leading to true 350 degree steam) aren't hard to avoid the stuff, but it probably would be wise to take the same precautions as pressure washing an engine. There are a number of guides to do that, but the basics are to cover the alternator, computer, etc. If you're talking a hot water pressure washer, I'm not a fan. These units are 2500-4000 psi and can only hit about 250 degrees.
Use whatever method you prefer to apply the chemical, let dwell, and steam away. As far as chemicals go, Meg's engine degreaser has won favorable reviews, though I've not used it yet. I use Meg's APC for the surrounding engine compartment and then dope some more APC with some caustic soda to make my own degreaser for the engine. Not recommended to try without a lot of experience! In all actuality, Meg's degreaser is probably just a more caustic version of their APC anyways.
All the chemical suggestions are assuming the lack of polished finishes under hood.Brandon
