Hello Everyone! This weekend I plan on giving my car a full detail and wanted to tackle the swirl marks while I'm at it. I have read that it's best to start with the milder products and work your way up however I can't seem to find the thread I was looking at that had the mild to heavier strength product list. The swirl marks I am going to try and correct are light to mild depending on the area and I was wondering which product would be best to start with? I will be working with Midnight Blue Metallic paint if it makes any difference.

Re: Swirls - Where to start?
I would go with Ultimate compound followed by Ultimate polish. Are you going to be working by machine or hand?

Re: Swirls - Where to start?
I always like to point to the pictures from the Saturday classes as a good starting point for first time projects.
That and suggesting a good thorough wash using a quality automotive shampoo and follow that with a clay job using a quality lubricant. These two procedures, wash and clay, provide a good foundation upon which to build your detailing project. Removing bonded contaminates helps improve the reflections you are striving for.
You will also see and read about test spots or test areas. Create a two foot by two foot area to start using your least aggressive product, most likely Ultimate Compound. Once you have that test spot the way you like it, you may continue on to the rest of your car.
As Evan points out, Ultimate Polish is an excellent follow up to Ultimate Compound. Be sure to follow Ultimate Polish up with a quality wax to help preserve the work you've just completed.

Re: Swirls - Where to start?
Unfortunately, I am going to be working by hand. Thanks for the link to the Saturday class threads they were helpful and it's good to know these products don't affect clear coat thickness to a measurable amount. I know that the prep work (good wash, clay, etc.) are very important and I plan on doing both. I will work with Ultimate Compound and Polish this weekend followed by waxing. Would some type of cleaner wax be recommended for use in the future to keep swirl marks away?
