Had this posted in an old thread and wasn't getting many views so I moved it here.

Need some help...what do you all see in this pic of my headlight? I've hit it with UC and rotary and cutting pad, not really getting any better. I have researched extensively on this site for headlight restoration. As someone mentioned on other thread, does this look like deteriorated plastic? Don't wantt o waste my time polishing if it's unpolishable. Thanks

    Re: Headlights

Those need to be sanded down, compounded polished then coated.

How smooth do they feel now? Can you feel any edges where the coating is failing?

I'm going to have to agree with Evan. The coating looks like its started to come off. I just used the heavy duty restoration kit and it worked good. But instead of using plastx I used the sanding discs, M105/M205 on my DA with 4" pads and then followed that with the sealant provided in the kit. The provided sealant would need to be applied evert 6-8 weeks. If you want a permanent fix you can reclear coat them or use something like opti-coat the headlight kit version.

Good stuff there Guz. Thats what I do except I use Opti-lens which has the UV coating you need for the protection regular opti-coat does not. When you sand down the lens you remove to UV coating so you need something that will have the UV protection in it and that what Opti-lens has and its great.

                        Re: Headlights

I used PlastX by hand a few times and it never worked for me. I did rub very hard each and single time.

I am thinking to get the Meguiars headlight kit and have to decide to get the regular one or the heavy duty one.

                          Headlight Restoration Process

Sand with 1500 grit (use soap/water), then with 2000 grit. Buff out with 105 using wool then medium pad. Finish with black pad and plastic-x....... see http://www.joscratch.com/2000vwjettaheadlightrestoration.html for pics
