  • Products and Steps to Care and Clean a Convertible Top

I haven't posted on here for years, but just a week ago, I got a hold of a 2013 Beetle Turbo Convertible in Reef Blue Metallic with beige interior and top. I've always wanted a convertible. This is my first convertible, and now that I have one, I have absolutely no idea how to wash, clean, and care for it -- the convertible top, that is. Go figure.

I've used the search function and haven't found much consensus on the forum for this topic. So I'd like to pose a few questions of my own. I understand that differences in convertible top materials means different cleaning solutions. So just so there's no confusion, the Beetle Convertible has a cloth top according to Volkswagen. Specifically, a three-layer design consisting of:

    - An outer layer made of polyacrylic woven fabric
    - An intermediate layer made of synthetic rubber
    - An inner lining made of polyester

I hope that this is descriptive enough to ensure that the top is unmistakeably cloth. That said, here is what I am not sure about:

    1) What Meguiar's products should I have on hand to clean and care for the convertible top?
    2) Are there other products or tools outside of the Meguiar's line that would be a benefit to have (assuming Meguiar's doesn't already have one available)?
    3) What new and/or additional steps should I take when it comes washing my new vehicle or applying the 5-step process (i.e. don't drench the top with too much water while washing, Ultimate Quik Detailer for paint as usual, ??? for regular wiping of the top)?

With the top definitely going to get exposed to dust, tree sap, big rig diesel soot, industrial fallout, dirty rain, bird droppings, and those yellow dotty things that appear out of nowhere over the course of its life, I want to do what I can to keep my convertible looking its best. I appreciate any thoughts and advice from the community.

And for reference, here's what my car pretty much looks like:

2003 Volkswagen Golf GL 2-Door (Manual) in Black / Beige
2012 Volkswagen CC R-Line (Manual) in Deep Black Metallic / Black
2013 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo Convertible w/ Sound in Reef Blue Metallic / Beige

for a brand new top you don't need a dedicated cleaner.
just wash and brush it if it needs it.
Vacuum it, and put a protectant on it I use 303 water repellent, this will keep everything from sticking to it.

Re: Products and Steps to Care and Clean a Convertible Top

While we do make a convertible top cleaner, it really only needs to be used if the top becomes stained or exceptionally dirty. Unfortunately, we do not offer a protectant here in the US.

If memory serves, the cloth top on the VW Beetle is made by Haartz (based here in the US but with manufacturing facilities here and in Europe) - they also make the OEM tops for Jaguar, BMW, Rolls Royce and many others (including my Chrysler Crossfire). Haartz actually recommends Ragg Topp products for cleaning and protecting, but most maintenance is actually quite easy: Generally speaking you want to avoid heavily soaping the top when you wash the car but wetting it completely is perfectly safe. In fact, if you intend to wash the top when washing the rest of the car, simply hose it off, brush it lightly with a soft brush, and then proceed to wash the rest of car as you always do.

If you're in the habit of using a quick detailer to wipe down your paint, or you use a waterless or rinseless wash process, the following works great for light duty cleaning of a cloth top: Fold a clean microfiber towel in quarters, and lightly mist one side with a 10% solution of isopropyl alcohol, then lightly wipe the top in straight lines. This will remove even moderate and embedded dust, while also removing light stains that come about from pollen, bug droppings, etc.

Cloth convertible tops are surprisingly easy to take care of, and even easier if you stay on top of things with regular, light cleaning.

I've found that the cloth top on my Saab 93 vert needs very little cleaning. When it does, I use a bit of Woolite diluted with water and apply it with a very soft brush. As for protectant, I use 303 once a year.

I watched a chemical guys video on YouTube just the other day about convertible tops. I think they were demonstrating quick detailing a convertible top in one and a fabric protectant in another.
