  • Ack, Eek, and Oh Noes!! *Megs Gold Class Wheel Cleaner Issue*

I decided since it had been a couple of weeks since I washed my wife's car to go the extra mile and use a dedicated wheel cleaner on her wheels. (I keep my wheels new looking just with my regular washes; really they sparkle).

I liberally applied Megs Gold Class Wheel Cleaner, did the wheel cleaning and did rest of car.
When I finished drying the car her tires (where the wheel cleaner has bled on to) had turned brown! Nice, drippy looking brown blotches.

It was getting late so I applied Megs Hot Shine tire spray and rubbed it in really, really well. Right now the tires of course look great, but I am worried do you think the Gold Class wheel cleaner did any tire damage? I had never used this wheel cleaner. The only wheel cleaner I have ever used before was Megs All Wheel Cleaner, but I stopped by Target tonight on way home, and they did not carry that, only the Gold Class, so I picked it up.

Just worried if the brown will still be there the next time I wash the car and if so, what would remove it. For a brown tire (which I never have had) I would imagine using Megs APC. Still, a little upset that a product they know will bleed some what on to the tires would do this. Her car is basically brand new, so the tires were in perfect shape.

    Thanks for any ideas.

    You'll be fine.

I reckon the wheel cleaner just stripped off any existing dressing on the tire, revealing a brownish appearance. Now you've dressed it again, so it's all good.

Well, just to be clear... what I am concerned about is did the Gold Class actually change the colour of her tires in those areas where it leaked on them.
Usually, I wash each week, and by the end of the week while tires are not deep black, they are still quite black.

I do see cars all the time with tires that are brown, but those are usually tires that are not cared for.

So when it comes time next week, or this weekend when I wash all the Hot Shine off her tires I do hope they will still be black, and not have those brown splotches be there, (as in permanently discolored).

THe brown you are seeing is cal tire blooming. This is normal and these are just gases within the rubber being released. An all purpose cleaner and a stiff brush will remove it.

I understand that tires turn brown as the anti oxidant (I think) is being pushed out.
This is not what I experienced.
Before cleaning her tires with the Gold Class Wheel Cleaner, they were nice and black.
After using the Gold Class Wheel Cleaner, where the tire cleaner "dripped" onto the tires, it left brown drippy splotches.

It is this drippy splotchy brown (which was definitely caused by the Gold Class Wheel Cleaner) that I am concerned about.

Are you sure the tires were black when completely bare? Or were they always dressed / partially dressed with something?

              Absolutely sure they were black.
Not as black of course as when dressed, but definitely black. A dull black.

In addition, you must remember the brown spots were clearly, very clearly where the Gold Class Wheel Cleaner dripped on to the tire. Not the normal brown blooming one would see on a tire.

All you're seeing was a bit of concentrated cleaning of the tire side wall where the wheel cleaner dripped onto it. There is no "damage" to the tire sidewall so don't worry about that. This wheel cleaner is less aggressive overall than the Hot Rims All Wheel & Tire Cleaner but it still has the ability to strip a bit of road grime, leeched anti ozonants, tire dressing etc from the sidewall.

If you're really concerned about any potential appearance issues (doubtful that this will happen even down the road) then a quick application of an APC product and a bit of sidewall scrubbing will take care of it. This should be a regular part of tire/wheel cleaning anyway.

Mike, when you say "this should be a regular part of tire/wheel cleaning"...why so?

Regular cleaning of the tire sidewall removes the leached anti ozonants that cause the tires to turn brown, and it removes any old dressing and road grime. Doing this prior to applying more dressing will allow the new dressing to better adhere to the surface and helps to avoid sling. If you prefer not to use a dressing, it's still a good idea to clean the sidewalls to remove the leached anti ozonants and road grime, thereby preventing the ugly browning (blooming) that may occur.

My wheel cleaner says wheel and tires so I use it on both

Mine says just for wheels. (Gold Class)

Well, we shall see next time I clean her car I suppose (unless the copious amount of tire dressing I scrubbed into the tires doesn't wear off enough, or it fixed it) if the brown spots are permanent or not. I sure hope not.

I scrub tires and wheels with Every single wash, always nice and black - dull after scrub and wash, and deep black after being dressed.
