  • Swirl marks help

    Hey everyone,

My black metallic car is almost a year old and has somehow got a ton of swirl marks (cobwebs or whatever I really can't tell what it is lol) in the paint. In the shade the finish looks fine but once the sun hits it, it paint looks horrible. I should also mention that there are some halo marks on the hood which I don't know how it happened. I detailed the car 4 months ago by using a clay bar, Meguiars Ultimate Compound, and Meguiars Ultimate liquid wax. Even after doing all that I noticed the same amount of swirls everywhere on the car. Note I did apply the compound and wax by hand.

So I'm going to try again before the summer ends to see if I can get the swirls out. So I need help to choose what product I need. The Ultimate Compound didn't remove the swirls so I need something else. My friend recommended Swirlx or Scratchx to remove the swirls so should I try one of those?

First time owning a black car and this will be my second detailing job so I'm kinda a noob at this haha.
    Thanks in advance.

Dude i did the same with my black e36 by hand using the same products as you. And it all came up with swirl marks despite using UC. What i have learnt is by hand requires alot of time and effort to get swirl marks off esspecially if ur paint coating is hard. Another mistake i made was letting the pads dry without cleaning through detailing the whole car. Just make sure there is no residue on the pads by brushing off or wiping of the excess dried products. End of the day i purchased a DA system so i can work the UC harder to remove the swirl marks.

Thanks for the quick reply! I might end up buying a DA to do this easier but did you manage to get the swirls out with the UC after using the DA?

        Re: Swirl marks help

Well first off most swirl marks come from improper washing and drying so using the proper tools and techniques will ensure you maintain a swirl free finish.

Now as for removing what you have your best better will be to pony up the change and buy your self a DA polisher pads and some products. You will achieve great results faster with less work needed.

The halos you were seeing is probably from the technique you were using with the pads while hand polishing. I'm going to say they were finger marks. These can be instilled while polishing mistake likely you ended up using your finger tips instead of the pads of your fingers. This often happens after fatigue sets in and your aarm gets tired.

          Hello and welcome to MOL.
UC isn't the problem it's that your working by hand.
You'll need a machine to remove paint defects quickly and efficiently.

You can do it by hand but it will take a long time and patience.

Thanks for the replies. I guess applying by hand isn't the best way of doing this. I might have an old orbital polisher lying around somewhere. Can I try that out and see if it does the trick before buying a DA?

You mean a cheap, $20 wax applicator type?
              You need something with power.
Investing in a DA is a great investment that will give you great results with little experience.

                  Re: Swirl marks help

I'm going off to college in about 2 weeks so I won't have time or money at this time to have a DA shipped. My dad brought that polisher a long long time ago (probably around 2000-2005) and I'm going to find it tomorrow and see what it is but I'm guessing it's a cheap turtle wax polisher. It should beat doing it by hand for now right? It won't do better than the DA obviously but until I get one I hope this should work for now.

Also, I went to an auto store a few days ago and saw the Meguiars DA Power System. It attaches to the drill and turns it into a DA Polisher. Is this a good product to buy instead of an actual DA polisher?

                      Re: Swirl marks help

An orbital WAS OK for applying wax, but it won't remove SM. The DA PS is better than by hand, but not a "replacement" for the 120V DA Polisher.

If you can successfully remove the SM's by hand, you will be built like Popeye! Swirl marks are much easier to make than to take (remove).
