  • Best fallout protection?

Unfortunately my wife is taking my big black Hemi to the St. Louis area at the end of the month. It will be parked at a biking trailhead for about a week. Yep, industrial contaminants and acid rain.

What will offer the best protection for this week -- an extra layer of NXT or fresh layer of "good old #16"?

Meguiar's best protecting formula is the NXT Tech Wax in either liquid or paste. I understand many people like the M1611 Professional Paste Wax but for protection value, R&D states that NXT Tech Wax offers the best protection of all of our waxes.

I don't like the sound of that. Couldn't she be dropped off there by someone or else take a taxi?

I don't like the whole idea all that much myself. The problem with a taxi -- we live 450 miles from St. Louis. A taxi would be a bit pricy.

My wife plans on taking my daughter and a friend. Therefore the need for something other than her silver Tacoma regular cab pickup. She's messed up two previous black vehicles on these biking trips. Acid rain both times. Her comment -- "You'll probably be buying a new vehicle this fall anyhow." If the Hemi gets messed up I just might do that. It's a 2003 with 50,000 miles on it.

I find that black is especially susceptible to environmental damage. The crud really bakes on and causes a bunch of etching.

I guess that I'll layer on a final coat of NXT the day before the trip. Would a fresh coat of NXT and a layer of #16 be even better or would that be "overkill"? I do know that water beading a bunch on the hood and top can cause lots of problems.

            Hey Tom,

Did you not go through this same scare last year? I seem to remember you and I talking about that.

I would use 2 coats of NXT or #21 Synthetic Sealant

              Tim,

It's getting to be a yearly thing. Last year it was Minnesota. The truck came back OK -- no rainy weather and it wasn't an industrial area.

I think my solution is going to be to buy a regular cab pickup for myself next time. No kids to haul, just a wife and dog. But quad cabs sure do have a nice area to keep guns and/or bows.

I saw a very nice 2005 Corvette on the way home this afternoon. That would be an even better choice if I lived in town. Darn, I'd look good in one of those. I have the bucks to buy one, but not the courage to drive it daily on my road. I know -- rent a garage in town........

I guess that I'll do the NXT twice. I've not had any water spotting/etching since I have started to use it reguarly.

Sorry about rambling around the topic.

2 coats of NXT Paste Wax, 12-24 hours between coats, no water or QDs until the wax has cured is what I recommend. Paste Wax is very easy to find and even easier to apply and remove. You will have to order the #21 in a gallon size, great stuff though!

                    OK Meguiar's Guys,

                    I get the idea.

I wonder what kind of response I'd get on the Autopia or Detail City forums. Folks on those forums seem to have raised a lot of questions about the durability of NXT. I've never been able to find out its durablity for sure because I use it so often.

I wonder what the "big city" folks use to protect their vehicles from the environmental junk. Probably frequent washing and waxing.

Over the past summer, I compared NXT liquid to MPPP,which I have found to be very durable. NXT hung right in there with it.

I think in a lot of cases where NXT durability has been questioned, contamination gets on the paint, such as tree sap, road sealant, or rail dust. This makes it impossible to judge the durability of a wax based on slickness or beading. And in my experience it affects all waxes in the same way. If a surface is gritty from contamination, it is hard to tell what a wax is doing. And I have yet to see any wax that can totally repel contamination. If anyone finds one, let me know, as I am willing to pay big bucks for it.

                        RamAirV1,

In other words I might end up getting out my clay.

Unfortunately, yes, depending on how much contamination and how long it sits on the paint. Claying is not a favorite detailing task of mine.

Could you possibly talk your wife into using the Speed Detailer on the Ram once per day?

Unfortunately she will be on a bike ride across the state of Missouri. The truck will be parked in a lot at the trailhead. I have her pretty well trained to take care of business if she is close to the truck. I send lots of soft cotton towels, change for the coinop and a QD for bird crud.

Oh well, it can't be any worse than when I came out of the backcountry in Colorado to find that while I was in the mountains a hail storm went through -- both hail damage and water etching. I had the truck repaired and traded it wthin six months. Until the hail hit this was a mighty fine looking full size black Chevy Blazer. A real SUV.

As I think about it, maybe I should just keep the Hemi and trade the wife. But then I need her income to help support my leisure time activities and bad habits.
