  • Clay for windshield cleaning and UQW for sealant?

flipping thru a griots catalog I saw they were advertising "glass cleaning clay" and "glass sealant" which creates a hydrophobic surface. Would the Meg's clay bar serve the same purpose and could ultimate quick wax spray do the same thing for a sealant?

Having not tried the Griots products, I can't say for sure. But I suspect they would...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

yes, it is good to clay the glass once in a blue moon, it is weird to see a shining look car with bad glass, wasn't it?
yup, applying UQW on side mirror should be ok but I will skip applying it on front mirror. maybe you can try turtle wax brand, their glass cleaner comes with hydrophobic property but i like meg smell.

I decontaminate all glass and trim.
Everything on a car its contaminated. D156 is what I put on all glass. Glass needs protection too. UQW is the consumer version of D156.

I use UQW on all my glass except for the windshield. It adds to the 'look' of the car as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Clay for windshield cleaning and UQW for sealant?

Some people get some chattering from their wipers if they use a wax or rainx type product.

I use both, and have never had it, and same on family's cars.

But some people do get it, so just have to try it if you want and see.

Probably some would be concerned about visibility.
I personally have used it on all my glass, and have never had any problems. Just make sure you do a good job and do not leave any streaks, or leftover wax on the windshield.

Another great product to use on glass, and lots of other items is ProtectAll. I really like their product and have used it for years on so many items.

For that super clear look on customers cars I just do a fast wash with cheap generic blue glass cleaner, and follow with a fast hand application of a cleaner/wax. It removes everything, and leaves ahydrophobic coat better than rain x. It does nothing but improve visibility.

I started doing this about a year ago and I am really happy with the glass. I hate having a clean, waxed car and a dirty windshield. Doing the blue bottle and a wax with cleaner after makes the WS look very nice.

Re: Clay for windshield cleaning and UQW for sealant?

Claying windshield is recommended. As with paint, contaminants can find its way onto glass and claying is a good way to really deep clean glass and also remove any stains, smudges and who-knows-what-that-dirt-is on windshield. I apply rain-x (not the windshield wax though), I apply it twice to 1. maximize protection and the water rolling off the glass effect and 2. maximize durability and clarity. So far, I've had good experience with rain-x and didn't really have those chattering wiper issues.

Re: Clay for windshield cleaning and UQW for sealant?

Claying glass is always a good idea as the glass on your car is subject to all the same fallout that the paint is. But the same clay you use on your paint is more than sufficient to decontaminate the glass as well. And that means if you can accomplish the task with a typical consumer clay, so be it. But if the contamination is really severe and you need to step up to a more aggressive clay for the paint, then you probably need to do the same on the glass. Any clay marketed specifically for glass is just that; marketing. Not there is anything wrong with marketing, don't get us wrong.

As for using UQW on your glass, we don't have any issues with that. Traditional paste or liquid waxes can be problematic on the windshield since people very commonly over apply these types of waxes. Doing so on glass can quickly lead to streaking, usually at the worst possible time - driving in the rain at night. But with a spray wax you'd have to work at it to over apply and run into this sort of issue. Is a spray wax going to be the longest lasting, most durable way to promote water beading/sheeting from your windshield? Maybe not, but reapplying is a piece of cake and takes very little time.

Re: Clay for windshield cleaning and UQW for sealant?

I use UQW on the entire exterior of my vehicles. That's paint, vinyl, chrome, stainless and glass. As Mike said, it's a piece of cake to use so I use it after every wash. It is much, much easier to use on glass than RainX, for me anyway, and yields the same water repelling effect. Definitely one of my favorite products, I buy it by the gallon as D156.

Another tip, My spouse loves it on the kitchen/laundry appliances and all the glass and mirrors in the home. I had to set her up with her own spray bottles of D156 and D120 (Glass Cleaner) because she was stealing mine and leaving an empty bottle in its place, . I found she was also giving samples to her friends and relatives.
