  • Detailing new Audi.....

Hello everyone, I have been scanning through the forum for a while now and decided to join. Lots of info here, actually I am a little overwhelmed by it all lol.

I bought my wife a 2013 Audi Q5 2 weeks ago and as I have read on here as most dealers do the polished it for pick up but after 2 washes it isn't as nice as before. I am using Gold Class wash with a Meguiar's wash mit.

It has very faint swirl/wash marks probably from the dealer, and a haze on the hood almost as if soap has dried on it.

What steps do you recommend and with what product? I like the sound of the Ultimate product But if there is a better product to make the paint on this thing look deep and wet let me know.

    Oh ya it is BLACK.

    Generally you would want to:

    1. Wash - 2 buckets, good quality towels, mitts. etc
    2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit
    3. Clean - This is where your options would be for removing swirls. Ult. Compound is an option, and Ult. Polish, #205
    4. Wax
    5. Wax - 2 thin coats are best.

As far as the swirl removal, will you be working by hand or machine?

      Thanks Murr,

      1. I am going to get an extra bucket today (I have just been rinsing the mit wit with the hose for now)
      2. Already bought the kit
      3. So do I use UC then hit it with UP? Or will just the polish be good enough on the new paint? Is UC newbie safe?
      4. should i use Ultimate wax or is there a better option for what I am after?

For now I have no machine but am thinking of getting a DA, the cost is my crutch right now. I might see if my drill is variable speed to use the Maguiar's power polisher kit.

UC for defect removal especially if you are going to do this by hand.
        UP to refine the finish.

With UC, I hardly doubt that you will go through your clear coat when done by hand.... although it is possible but highly unlikely.

Working by hand, you would almost certainly want the UC, or at least to have it on your shelf at the start so not running back out to the store. Tend to want to apply with a smooth foam applicator, and start off with some mild pressure, then build up a bit more if needed.

As long as you work over a small area, and dont just focus one finger on one tiny spot, not much can really go wrong.

But woking by hand to remove swirls usually isnt easy... so either of the machines would be a big help. Even if you focused more on the UC by machine now, and applied the polish and wax by hand if needed.

The UP after the UC would be optional... The UC may finish out real nice, or leave a little marring for the UP to clean up. So if everything looks good, could save the UP for next time, with just a regular detail.

As far as durability, Ult Wax would be best... As far as looks, different people like different things. The Ult. Wax will look good... some may like the Gold Class+ or #26 Yellow wax a bit more.

              Excellent.

              Pad cleaning is very important.

Take some before and after photos and share.

I used #7 polish and #26 carnauba wax (doesn't last as long as Ultimate) a couple weeks and 1500 miles after I got my TL.

                  or......my none ssa trams answer...

Well it being black and trying to correct the paint by hand will be nearly impossible.
Well you can do "some" correction but nothing compared to a machine polish.

With that being said I use a cleaner wax to get a good coat of wax on it asap and it will "polish" it slightly too.
The new White Wax has good cleaning/Polishing abilities. Yes you can use the WW on black. It's just a name and no pigments or other crud in it. It's not Turtlecrap.
Black Wax is a good wax but you'll more then the polishing power of BW, very minor polishing power even with a machine. But is a great wax for black cars.
Black loves polish so to get that luster of black you'll need a machine.

                      Thanks!

Is this the big weekend with the DA?

Take some breaks between panels, the DA and you will need to relax a bit.

I may start to do some in stages due to time restraints. It is supposed to be poor weather here though and my garage is tight on space so we will see. It will for sure get a wash tomorrow morning though!!
