  • Help needed with leather issue!

Hi I have a leather issue with a 2009 Toyota Rav4 Limited that I hope you can help me out with. The leather wasn't trashed by any means, but it did have some areas where various dye transfers were very difficult to remove. I used various common leather cleaning products to start with... Meguiar's, Mother's, and Lexol which did very little to nothing with the dye transfer. So I bumped it up with a steamer which helped, but to my surprise still wasn't dong the job to my satisfaction. I then used some Meguiar's APC Plus at 10:1 with my trusty Swissvax brush (http://www.swissvax.us/product/SE1043590.html *Link supplied only for materials reference in case someone thinks this thing is not good to use) and this was working and I incorporated the steam along with the APC Plus and I had 1 area that got funny on me. I don't know if it was the steam or APC or a combo of both or if this area was "stressed" and reacted poorly to this, but I have an issue. There is some discolored spots in one section. The leather dye or the leather itself came off? Keep in mind the APC was applied uniformly. I say this area may have been stressed because one little tiny area that clearly was worn down (scuffed) had the same reaction and discolored/spotted. What can I do to correct this? Is there a dye or some other method I could use to get this back to normal and match? Can a replacement section be purchased from the factory and sewn in? What would a leather pro charge to do this as this is not something I have ever done and I may seek out someone else to do it. The area looks worse and appears to be a much larger area in the pictures... in person it's not such a large area. Thank you for the help.

You have apparently removed the leather's topcoat. What ever was used on the leather was too abrasive or this area was already re-dyed and not clear coated. The repair will require a light sanding, re-dye (exact color matching is vital), and a respray of clear. There will also be the issue of grain matching so a grain lifter of some sort likely will be needed. This is really not a DIY repair. I'd suggest taking the car to a leather restoration shop. You might also search a salvage yard for a used skin.

Once the protective topcoat has been removed from the leather it is significantly more fragile so I'd not wait too long to get it fixed.

One more thing... Dye transfer can be completely avoided. Use of a leather protector (a fluorocarbon protectant) effectively seals the topcoat to prevent dye transfer. Conditioners do not provide this protection.

Thank you so much for the help! Can you recommend a leather specialist in Western Pennsylvania? Any idea how much a repair like this will cost? Also what product (fluorocarbon protectant) do you recommend? Thank you!

You might ask your local auto dealership, a premium leather furniture store or look to the yellow pages for leather reconditioning. I'd expect that could be repaired for right around $200. I'd expect you might find a used skin in a salvage yard for around the same price.

As to protection products, I have been a long time fan of Leather Masters Protection Cream. Meguiar's has just released a new leather sealant as well. I have not tried it yet but I believe it to be a fluorocarbon protectant. There are a few others available if you search. Most people jump on conditioners but protected lighter colored leather needs a leather protector to prevent dye transfer.
