  • Finger scratch marks - clear coat or wax?

I have an Audi A4 in Brilliant Red. When I gently rub my finger on the paint surface it appears to leave very fine scratch marks! I do detail the car so I am questioning whether the scratches are somehow in the wax (but why is it that soft?) as I cannot see how they could be in the clearcoat. I use Ultimate wax followed by DC Carbonara wax. I tried taking some pics to share with the forum but the fine scratches don't show. I also notice how my microfiber clothes also seem to do the same. Ihave not detailed my car again recently to see if the scratches are there after the wax is removed. I am interested in any opinions? Thank you.

Get a microfiber applicator pad, wipe with ultimate compound.

Thanks, but that makes no sense. I don't need a compound. Are you suggesting my finger scratches are in the clear coat? No, I am interested to know why the scratches happen - are they in the wax?

Get some rubbing alcohol and wipe it over the scratches...it will remove the small section of wax. If you still see the scratches...well, there's your answer! Then re-wax. My instincts tell me they are in the CC.

            I've had a similar experience.
My car was waxed with NXT topped with GC. Noticed a small stain on my bumper and I got a bit aggressive with the MF which resulted in what looked liked some scratches. On the next wash with my DA and UC in hand went searching for that scratch, but I could not find it. Just disappeared so I just assumed that it was only on the wax and not clearcoat.

yes you are scratching it. if you seee scratches then your scratching it.
when ever you touch the paint your scratching it to some degree.

@C8N, thanks, that is what I think it is. Will do a test when I next do a full detail! If you think about it, if it was indeed scratching the paint (clear coat) then imagine what the car would look like being owned by a non-detailed driver!! I think that because there are layers of wax, with the top layer very soft, then it makes it susceptible to these 'scratches', not going to worry anymore
