  • Clay Barring Glass and Rain X

Hi, I had recently clay barred my windows using the clay bar kit for the first time and went to apply a coating of Rain X as usual. One problem I discovered though is that when it rained and when I washed my car, I noticed that the water is sticking on the windows and I though it was very odd seeing as how Rain X always produced great results for me. After a while, I had figured out that it seems the Rain X did not like being applied on top of the Quick Detailer I used for clay lubrication and did not work too well. Has anyone else come across such a problem? Also, would anyone know of any suggestions for fixing this? I have heard many other people clay barring their windows and applying Rain X with no problems. What did I do wrong?

You would probably need to wipe it down with IPA after claying and before applying RainX.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Yeah, I use a glass cleaner in between.

I've done this for years and never had a problem. but I don't use a detail spray when claying.
I use water and a few drops of car wash soap.
I've never had a problem with Rain X sticking.
So it just might be your detail spray.

Yeah, thanks for all your suggestions guys, although now I know what to do for future glass deep cleaning processes would you guys have any suggestions on how I can clean everything off to start with a clean slate? I have tried using glass cleaner and an IPA wipe, but this Rain X is very resilient!

Wait what? Now your saying the RainX is stuck to your class?
so you don't have problem with it adhering?

No no, I mean that when I put it on, it did not just completely get repelled by the detail spray. Some of it stuck and mixed with the detail spray making a big mess! I kind of half worked. lol The water was beading up better than not having Rain X on the windows, but it was also sticking and not sliding off so it was stuck in the worst possible middle ground. I just want to remove the entire concoction put on the windows and start fresh with just Rain X. I know how well it works on its own and I love it!

No he's not. In his first post he said that water was sticking to his windshield as the RainX application doesn't seem to be working correctly. In his next post he's basically saying that the RainX that is on the window won't come off. I've never used RainX personally (we get what, 8 inches of rain annually here in SoCal?) so I've never had to try and remove it. It does seem rather odd though that a basic QD would compromise the application of RainX unless RainX really doesn't like even the very minute level of silicone in Quik Detailer.

Yeah, thanks for clearing that up for me Michael! Yeah, it seems like that is what is happening for me being a very odd case. At first, I did it because I would never had thought that it would have such a big effect, but it did. I guess I will try using just soap and water the next time I clay bar like Please Wash Me Detailing suggested. Also, I will try using the compound to remove everything. I just think it is very odd because I had never heard of anyone else having such a problem before. Thanks for all your help though guys!

Re: Clay Barring Glass and Rain X

I seem to end up with some clay smudges usually (not using enough QD on the glass), so pretty much need the glass cleaner or something to clean it up before I go on. But if you weren't getting any, then may have been easy to skip over.
