  • Ultimate wax: difference between !st and second coat

    * 8 month old dark blue metalic respray never waxed until now

Washed the entire car with gold class, then focused on the roof alone. The Car has been clay barred before using quick detailer as a lubricant. Water is beading up like it has been waxed ??? I noticed but kept going.

2 passes with Swirl X applied with a DA in shade.
2 passes with Ultimate polish applied with a DA in the shade

Light swirls removed I can't wait to see what the Ultimate wax will do. Well I applied 1 coat of Ultimate with a finishing pad and the Major improvement did not happen. I can't tell the difference in the roof and the trunk which has not been touched.

I dealing with already very glossy BC/CC paint, so maybe I'm not going to see a major improvement ??

12 hrs is tomorrow morning Just wondering if this is common or I'm i expecting too much from already decent finish.

wax is just a protection layer with very fine particles. You will not see much different compared to Polish that helps to add gloss and remove swirl at the same time.

Most of the shine will come from the proper prep. Clay, clean, polish (excellent for dark colors), and wax. Wax is like the icing on the cake, wax will add gloss for sure, but will also protect the shine produced by the proper preparation steps taken. 1 coat adds even more depth and clarity, the 2nd coat is more for ensuring even coverage or even marginal improvement in protection.

Thanks for the replies. The picture is wax on. The paint had swirls (directly from body shop) so I figured the next step would offer an equal measure of improvement. The paint is a metalic. Thanks again for the advice.

                Good work.

Yeah, you won't always be able to see a difference after waxing, especially if you've prepped / polished beforehand like you did. The wax is more for protection.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Very shiny! Was it taken when water was still sheeting off the car? Kidding aside, very nice shot... No swirls, deep, crispm shine..

This is a common misconception about waxes - that they make or break the finish. Any appearance differences among various waxes and sealants are going to be both subtle and personal. But wax alone is not where all your gloss comes from - that's all the prep you did in the earlier steps to correct the defects in the paint. Once you do all that correction to a very high level, any difference you may see from one wax to another is going to be purely subjective. Some people can see a difference if two different waxes are applied side by side, but even then it often comes down to a trained eye and experience. It's sort of like debating the differences in high end audio, fine wines, cigars, etc. Some people can discern very fine differences among otherwise very similar examples of each, while others can't.

So go with three coats then?

I am still baffled as to why Ultimate wax isn't in my collection.
I hear sooo many good things.

Thanks for all the kind words. This old Chevelle is starting to come together nicely. I begin the restoration in 2004, so after so long a wait, my expectations are pretty high. The shot above was taken right after waxing, the next day it was better, (curing is something I have not heard of before reading about it on this forum) I applied a second coat with deminishing returns. After gaining the info in the thread, that the results are mostly achieve before wax, I just did it cause I was going to do it anyway.

The trunk I spoke of earlier was done the same way as the roof and I thought it turned my dark blue paint into wet black glass.

Maybe the way the paint was applied or the curvature of the body panel, but it seemed to have a head start on the roof from the begining, and in stong daylight, "out glossed" the roof pretty good. It's a re-spray so no telling. I'm content for now. Thanks again for the encourgement.
