  • Glob of Clear Coat

The trunk spring snapped and caused a dent from the inside (convex looking from the outside). I went to a local dent doctor and the guy managed to level the dent. For the cracked paint, he put on a glob of clear coat to seal it. He said to let it dry for a few days and go back so he would polish it out.

It has been 4 days, I am wondering can I level it with UC with some elbow grease?

My first suggestion would be to just take it back to the dent doctor and let him take care of it. But if you really want to do it yourself this is how I would do it.

What you can do is wet sand it and then use compound to polish the sanding marks out. I would use 1800 grit to get it level with the rest of the paint. Then 2000 grit to smooth the 1800 grit. Then 3000 grit to polish out the 2000 grit. You want to use a small sanding block or you can get a flat piece of wood, something similar to the game Jenga or building blocks and wrap the sand paper around it. The reason you want to use this is to make sure it is flat, even pressure when sanding. Another reason is because the area is probably small and you don't want to sand the rest of the clear coat surrounding it. If the area is bigger then I would suggest using a DA sander to get the clear coat sanded down to the rest of the finish. Once the clear coat is level that is when you would use compound to get rid of the 3000 grit marks. Once you are done with the compound then you can just wax the area for protection. This is if you want to do it yourself.

OK. I would not want to do any sanding. Too bad, I was hoping UC would save me a trip.

        take it back
        It has to be sanded.
But you can rub the heck out of it with a strong compound like M105/Ultimate Compound.
I might take you 10-20 mins to achieve what your looking for but you can do something yourself. Also it probably won't be perfect if you just use a compound.
And if your painter didn't prep the area properly you risk the chance of dislodging the blob.
So your best bet would be to take it back so it'll come out prefect and not botched.
