Durability of wxes?

    Durability of wxes?

    Looking to figure out which Wax is longer lasting? I know variables like rains etc will effect the durability and length of time before needing another coat of wax. Reason I'm asking is that a potential new customer was scratch/swirl correction then a wax after to protect for a year. Now I doubt a year, but maybe 6-8 months. I want to reply to him with an honest answer before sending him an email back. I want to book him as soon as I can, but want to make sure everything is good first.



    Waxes I currently have are White Wax, Nxt 2.0, and a Pure Wax - Deep Crystal Carnuba Wax. I'm getting ready to add another Pure wax, the Hi-Tech Yellow Wax since I just ran out of that. Any help is appreciated!

    The longest lasting Meguiars wax/sealant is Ultimate Wax. I prefer the Ultimate Paste Wax. The most durable wax I have come across is Collinite 476 Super Double Coat Paste wax. This is an old school paste wax, like Meg #16 which is no longer available in the USA. If you go with the Collinite, very, very, very thin application, and be prepared for some elbow grease to remove it. The Collinite claims up to a year, I would say 6 solid months in most conditions.

      I will stay with Meguiar's. Ultimate Wax is the one I don't have at this time, but can have it for the job. Any idea the on approx. longevity for the UW?

        If you want to stick with Meg's UPW is a great choice. I have used it on my personal vehicles and would say durability is 4-6 months. Two coats of UPW to ensure coverage and you should be golden. If your client wants a year of protection you are going to have to go with a coating and Meg's doesn't manufacture one.

          What about the liguid version? I'm not really a paste guy.

            The liquid will last just as long as the paste. It also won't stain black trim.

            A potential disadvantage is that it can streak, whereas the paste version does not.

              Well with a hand injury, I can't really apply by hand with the paste. I won't have time to mess with something that streaks, so who knows what I will do. I could buy the DA Power system, but I've spent so much already. I still haven't broke even this year yet. Next year maybe, lol

                Can still use a paste by machine, esp with the small pads.

                  If your looking for durability but prefer the meguiar's route, just go with ultimate wax and advise your client to use UQD and/or UQW in between waxing. It will be very hard (not impossible) to guarantee a specific period of protection for the paint. As for the pure wax, Deep Crystal or Hi-tech yellow wax will add warmth to the finish, especially dark and warm colors but you would be putting something on top of Ultimate Wax's protective Hydrophobic Polymers which to a certain extent, would be a shame. Just Ultimate Wax and advise on proper car wash techniques, UQD and UQW, the shine would last a long time if done right

                    Michael Stoops indicated the formula of Ultimate Wax has been tweaked just a bit to reduce the chances of streaking. I've used Ultimate Wax liquid since it was introduced. Most of the cars I do are daily drivers and I want the longevity UW offers.

                    I use a Porter-Cable set on speed 3 and a 4" soft pad to apply over most of the car. It goes on so thin, it's almost difficult to see it. However, I do put it on by hand around mirrors, door handles, logos, emblems, and most front and rear bumpers. I can't emphasize enough, "thin to win". Put it on thin, a little goes a long ways. Using a hand applicator, it takes a couple of applications of wax onto the applicator to get it "loaded" with wax. After it is loaded up, don't put as much on the applicator as you would a "traditional" wax/sealant.

                    I think the streaking issue is over stated. Granted, I used it so much I can get it to streak on purpose. Too thick or going over it time and time again can cause streaks. In most of my cases, it goes away on it's own or can be wiped away in the various techniques people have suggested. There is no "swipe test" to see if it ready to be wiped off. 3 - 5 minutes works very well. Although I have left it on overnight and it wipes off just fine.

                    Wait as long as you can before putting on a second coat to allow the sealant to cross link. The time suggested for it to cross link is 8 to 12 to 24 hours. I put on a coat last thing in the day and put a second coat on the next morning. Remember the second coat is just to insure adequate coverage, not to layer the wax. The second coat rarely, if ever, streaks and wipes off in a breeze. Wait times of less than 8 hours do not seem to have negative effects, although I do prefer not to get it wet until plenty of cure time has passed.

                    Ater washing the car, I usually dry using Ultimate Quik Wax. For light dusting, I use Ultimate Quik Detailer. I also use Ultimate Wash and Wax Anywhere as a detailer too. Actually it has become one of my favorites. I use it on the front bumper before I leave on small or long trips. It makes it easier to remove bugs. And Ultimate Wash and Wax Anywhere is great for bug removal after then have passed to the great beyond after they have the misfortune of meeting my car.

                    I have no idea how long UW lasts, as I wash often and my car is a daily driver. I just know if Ultimate Quik Detailer isn't easy to apply, the wax is gone. You can also tell when you rinse the car, if the car is difficult to dry the wax is gone.

                    On a properly prepared car, the reflections are very well defined and pretty much awesome. If that isn't the look you are after top UW with Gold Class Plus, a very good combination.

                      Great post. It really is a great product. Both paste and liquid work well. Something about the feel of the paste version I really like when applying.
