  • Yikes....streaking problem

The first time I used the Ultimate Liquid Wax it went on beautifully. No streaks and a brilliant shine. I just waxed my vehicle on the weekend and it also looked great in the sunshine. However today it is overcast and the streaking is really bad! I applied using a thin coat over the entire vehicle and then as the instructions indicate I let it dry to a haze. (I used the finger test as posted) I then used the microfiber cloth that came with the wax to remove. It looks really bad and I am very disappointed after all my hard work to have this as a result.
What can I do to eliminate the streaks and please do not tell me I have to reapply the wax to the entire vehicle again. I have been an advocate of the Meguiar's products for years now however this is not the result I want as I am very meticulous about my vehicles.

    Please help!

Yeah... Dont let it dry....May have just got lucky with the weather or whatnot the first time.

Either apply to a panel then remove, or apply to the whole car, then remove right away, possibly with a damp cloth to help.

If you care for your car often, the next wash and spray wax should even it all out. If the car has been getting dirty, dont want to do more wiping/rubbing.

Don't let it dry?? Are you saying the instructions on the bottle are wrong?

When did the application procedure change? I was not aware that you remove immediately while the wax is still wet?

Yeah... thats what I am saying.

If applying in a thin coat, there really shouldnt be much if anything to remove, wet or dry.

Hey "Thank You" for the info. Was there a bulletin put out by Meg in this regard? I have not looked at the new boxes on the shelf but I was jut wondering if they have also changed the directions on the bottle?

            Re: Yikes....streaking problem

There has been quite a bit discussed on this forum about not letting ULW dry (as per what Murr said). The concensus is that is the best method to prevent streaking whilst apparantly not effecting the protection. ULW is said to be a little different to traditional waxes in that regard.

For some weird reason though, it still states to let it dry to a haze in the instructions on the bottle (unless they have changed it on the newer bottles).

By the way, the "remedy" for this streaking, if it occurs again and if your car has not collected any dust after waxing it, is to very lightly mist a MF towel with water and buff the streaks off. You should be able to find a few threads discussing that too.

A QD such as UQD also could do the trick to remove the streaking..

I'm surprised the streaking didn't disappear on it's own after that much time. Too thick or over working it can lead to streaking. Lay it down thin and wipe off in 3-5 minutes. Two ounces should do a whole car.

I will be purchasing this soon and will see what a bottle says to do on it.

                    Re: Yikes....streaking problem

Hey guys "Thank You" for the input. My vehicle is a mess and I really want to correct this. So I am going to wash the vehicle and try the MF towel with the light misting to see if I can buff out the streaks. I used a very light app on this and can't figure out what went wrong here? If worse comes to worse then I will redo the vehicle using the new method of a panel at a time rather than letting it dry. I have searched the entire forum and I did not find any bulletin issued by Meg regarding this change on the application method?
Just curious is this streaking problem also inherent with NXT?

Thanks again for you help on this.

                      Well, some info here maybe.

No, Nxt (and Ult. Wax Paste) is pretty much like older waxes. Really only streaks if applied thicker and not allowed to dry.

Yeah. The streaks are a result to applying it too thick. It has to be applied thin, thin, thin. Can't stress this enough.

If you can see Ultimate Liquid Wax haze over like a traditional carnauba wax it's too thick!

The haze with ULW is more of a blurry look to the paint. Remember once the wax is wiped off the protectant layer left behind is super thin. So it really shouldn't take much product to start with; more is just wasting product.

Removing the streaks is going to take more work. And, yes. You'll have to redo most of the car. A quick spray wax would do the trick. So would a moist MF cloth (you'd have to keep it moist) in one hand and a dry MF in the other hand using a wipe-then-dry cycle. Another option would be to create a diluted solution of the ULW (2:1 or 3:1, water:ULW) and use it to rewax the streaks.

                        Good luck.

                          Re: Yikes....streaking problem

                          Hi guys,

Well I went out and washed the vehicle, dried it well and then used a microfiber towel with a mist bottle and buffed out all of the streaks. Worked really well and now the vehicle looks like it should after a Meg wax job.

Thanks alot for the instructions and the tips re this UW. Made notes for future reference. However this product should not be this precise to work with. Most guys like to wax their vehicles without all of the precautions to ensure a great finish. This is 2013 and Meg should be making these products easier to work with. This is a lot of work for a 71 year old retiree. I am very meticulous about my vehicle however I really do not need all this work to achieve a great wax job. I may try the paste next time and hopefully as posted this will eliminate the streaking problem.

Thanks again for all your help. Nice to know this resource is available.

Well, if you wash often end use something like UQW after (also applied lightly), it should be a while before doing it again.
