    Cleaning With Ulitmate Quick Detailer

    Tuesday I washed, clayed and waxed my Z so naturally Wednesday it rained and I had to run some errands. Didn't get around to washing the car today and wanted to spruce it up for a short road trip tomorrow. The top and hood are clean but the sides and back end are covered with a really fine, gritty coat of road film from the wet roads. Light rub with a finger doesn't move the stuff so it's stuck on pretty good. The paint on this car is really pristine with no dings or swirl marks anywhere other that a few really tiny rock chips up front. I tried some UQD and a microfiber towel on a small part of the front fender and it cleaned OK but I'm really nervous about causing some tiny scratches with just the UQD and a towel. I use a California duster to get rid of dust on the car but this stuff is worse than dust. How safe is it to clean gritty stuff with UQD? I know a soap and water wash would be preferable but if circumstances prevent it would UQD work?

    Use a duster if it's only dust and dry.
    Or if you want to wash it use a waterless/spray on wash.
    A detailer is for a clean car. It has no soap or surfactants.
    I wouldn't use a detail spray like that.

      Cool! That's what I was thinking too but figured I'd better ask to be sure. I need to pick up some waterless wash for days like this.

        From your description, I would do a traditional 2BM wash.

          I've learned to give up on wanting my vehicles to always be extremely clean. Once in a while I will wash my vehicle and it rains that same day or the day after but it's only some dirt and dust, nothing for me to stress over. Then I will just wash the vehicle within a week or two.

            You have a couple of really good options here that do not involve pulling out the hose and bucket:
            1. Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere - use it much like you would a quick detailer except you'll use more product and more towels. When done properly, a waterless wash like this is totally safe as well as very quick and easy to do.
            2. D114 Rinse Free Express Wash - one ounce of product mixed with two gallons of water in a bucket and you've got a great way to wash your car in no time, using a minimal amount of water. If you use Garry Dean's method where he stacks a bunch of towels in a bucket with the solution mixed up, you never put a dirty towel back in the bucket and can safely clean a dirty car in very little time.


            Just as examples of both of the above, taken from personal experience, my first hard core use of Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere came a few days after we introduced it at SEMA in 2011. I had driven my weekend toy to Las Vegas figuring that after a long week of working the trade show it would be nice to drop the top and blast home across the wide open desert. Except it rained the whole way home. 275 miles along a major trucking route that hadn't seen rain in quite some time, so the grime that got washed off the road and thrown up onto my car was horrible. But UWWA, along with half a dozen towels, did an outstanding job cleaning the car without inflicting any new marring. Of course the softness or delicateness of the paint will play a big role in this, but it is a great alternative to a bucket wash. UWWA is also the perfect thing to bring along on longer road trips where you know your car is going to get dirty but you won't have a chance to wash it properly when you reach your destintion.

            D114 takes all this up a notch and can safely clean a car that's even dirtier than what you might trust a waterless wash like UWWA with. Yes, it means using a bucket, but there's no need to drag out the hose and you end up using just a couple gallons of water total. And if you use Garry's method you can even clean several cars with just a few gallons of water. It really does work great!

              When you said gritty,Im thinking NO California Duster,
              NO Quick Detailer
              If it was mine,I would wait, squirt it off good and do a conventional 2 bucket wash !
              Your car looks way to nice to gamble on installing swirls or even light scratches.

                Be sure not to really drag/rub a California duster around... it is meant to more hover over the surface and only lightly/barely touch.

                  Loose dirt, I'd just do the duster and the Ultimate WWA. Film is another thing. Film and grit on soft black paint, there is no question, the traditional soap and water is the only way to go. It just feels right to us ol skool guys, but really its not the suds its the surfactants and the newer products have the most effective surfactants ever that work without foaming.

                    Is there any way to remove road grime without rubbing the surface? Hot water, CG foam, and Meguiar's Gold all don't remove road grime without rubbing (on a well waxed smooth surface) , either separately or in combination. Any ideas?

                      Is it like a film or water spots? Pics would help.

                      Either way, if you've tried all of the above, the next step would be to clay, then polish/compound.

                        It's just the everyday muddy grime that gets kicked up from the road in Winter. It would be easy to remove with soap and a microfiber mitt, but I'm searching for a touchless method to use between 2bw's, since it's rarely above freezing.

                          Have you tried a waterless wash, like Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere or D115?

                            Not yet, but I've heard only good reports. Is it able to loosen and remove the stuck-on crud without physically dragging / wiping the dirt across the surface?

                              No. You wet the part with the solution and then use a solution wetted micro fiber to remove the dirt. The product lubricates and protects the paint from damage during the careful wipe procedure.
