  • Mothers Reflection top coat over NXT

Would Mother Reflection advanced top coat be a good lsp over NXT? I've heard that NXT is a cleaner/wax, and I was wondering if my 2nd coat would just take off some of the previous coat.

I read somewhere that the new Reflections top coat was specifically designed because people wanted to layer their waxes.

It was specifically designed as a LSP. (Last Step Product)

I have also read that it gives a wet look. Has anybody tried this combo or this product? I tried two coats of NXT and wasn't too impressed with the results at first, but after a few days, I got the look I wanted from NXT. It seemed like it was at its best two or three days after I detailed my truck. Maybe, it was just the lighting or something.

It seems to be a common thought that the wax looks better a day or two later.

As far as layering Mothers, it is up to you. Go for it and try it. If it looks even better, great. The idea of 2 layers of wax I believe is more for a uniform look, and coverage. You're just not going to build up a deep layer of protection. Layering different waxes, even within the Meguiars line, can give different looks. The only problem is waxes are designed to adhere to a surface, and then keep things from adhering to them. This can include other waxes. If this wax was specificaly designed to sit on top of another wax, maybe it will last a while and give a nice look.

My experience, gleaned from waxing almost neurotically (but actually theraputically) for several years, sometimes every other day and with scores of different waxes and sealants, is that the car is going to look like whatever you last used on it. So if you're happy with the Mother's Reflections, then stop there. If you're dissatisfied and want to try putting something on top of it to make it look better, then NXT is a great choice... but it's going to look like NXT always does, not different because it's over top of Mother's Reflections.

Aw shoot man, if he likes the stuff who am I to argue with him. I looked at a bottle of it the other day when I was at Pep's but then I remembered, I'm trying to quit (buying new stuff).

When you put on 2 layers of NXT, did you wait 12 hours between coats? If not you're not really topping it. Try waiting 12 hours between coats so the wax can cure and I think you'll be very happy. A Nxt is the best shine.

Yeah, I waited 12 hrs between coats of NXT, but it did rain during that time period. I'm not saying I was disappointed with NXT. I actually got a lot of compliments on it. For some reason it just looked a lot better a couple of days later.

I think Mosca is right about layering waxes. If it did add incremental benefits Meguiars and the other manufactuers would be letting consumers know of the added benefits. This would translate into more of their products being used, which equates to more sales.

I think Mothers' marketing department did some market research on how consumers were detailing their vehicles and noticed consumers were layering waxes and finishing with a lsp. This led to the product extension of Reflections Top Coat.

I wonder if Meguiars will come out with an NXT Top Coat as well. With a lot of the NXT users layering NXT, I'm sure it would sell.

On the notion of layering waxes, I think it does lay down a more even coat, but as far as adding any benefits beyond that I am still undecided. That is one of the reasons I asked my original questions. As far as brand loyalty, most of the products I have purchased are Meguiars' products. Thanks in large part to this forum, but I'm sure you guys aren't as brand loyal as you lead on.

If you are, that is great. I think Meguiars products give exceptional results. As for me, I don't want to limit myself to just one brand. If you aren't supposed to talk about other manufactuers' products I apologize for bringing it up.

Is this website designed only to answer questions regarding Meguiars products? I know people use their own combinations and have their preferred lsp, but do you think Meguiars will come out with a consumer labeled lsp? I think it would be a great follow up product for NXT. With more people become aware of the proper steps in paint care, I'm sure that more and more consumers will start adding a lsp to their detailing products.

Well, it may seem like a lot of people care on here.. but I think the actual population that has a clue about detailing is still pretty low. Even washing seems like a mystical event to a lot of people.

I have a feeling they will stick with Nxt as the lsp for now, although i think Nxt followed by Gold class is a popular combo.

According to email reply from Meguiars, I can apply another coat of NXT paste right after I buff off the first coat of NXT paste, and get better shine and protection than single coat of NXT paste.

NXT wax and TurtleWax Platinum wax seem to be kind of semi-layerable waxes: mild cleaning, but more protection by 'layering.'

                    Murr1525,

Yeah, I agree with you that the amount of people that actually know the proper techniques of paint car is probably pretty low, but there is definitely a growing market segment out there that do. Companies have to stay innovative or they will lose market share.

Inevitably, people will gain more and more knowledge about car care. If you go to almost any car forum, they usually have a detailing forum.

Three months ago, I had no clue what was involved in detailing. A product line I would like to see would be one that had a base wax and then steps that would add gloss, wetness, etc..... This would lead to the consumer’s taste preference and satisfactions being met.

I am not a chemist of course, but I think they probably have to balance out a lot of factors when they create a wax, such as car color, gloss, wetness, reflectivity, etc..... This would lead to a product that is universal in a sense. I know some of Meguiars products have stood the test of time, and a if it's not broke don't fix it philosophy probably comes into play. Nevertheless, I think that companies should always look to the future instead of the status quo.

More and more companies are replacing a bureaucratic management style with an entrepreneurial management style. This is just my take on it.

The DC 3 step system is that in a nutshell. Perfect for the average "joe Blow" provided you use coreect washing and prep techniques that is.

I was referring to a product line that would use something like ColorX as the base (cleaner, polish, and wax). Some people might just want to stop there, but there would also be additional products that would enhance the base. Therefore, if the consumer wanted a wet look, he/she could add ColorX Wet Look Topper (I'm just using ColorX as an example name). There would also be additional products like ColorX Mirror Topper (for reflectivity), ColorX High Gloss Topper, etc..... I don't know if it is feasible to make such a line, but I'm sure people would try different combinations. This would all be directed towards the OTC market because I know that professionals get the look they want by mixing existing products. I'm kind of suprised that Meguiars marketing department doesn't use this forum for market surveys.
