  • Paint on the hood looks like leather

    Hi Guys,

My last project which was repainted fully about 5-6 months ago has developed a "leather like" appearance on the hood. At first I thought it was just sanding marks from bad prep but I think there is more to it. (It may have sanding marks but they are accompanied by this other texture thing).

Any idea what that leather like texture could be? I'm pretty sure it wasn't there when it was freshly painted and the painter said it needs 3 more months (the car already has about 6) and then it just needs more polishing w/ M105.

That doesn't sound about right but I'm tempted of using some M105 right now.

Sounds like it has real bad orange peel.If it is,some damp sanding is in order.

If this texture is orange peel, which is very common, then some damp sanding and compounding is in order, but you shouldn't have to wait 6 months to do that. If the texture is actually cracking or other defects in the paint showing up, then you've got a much more serious problem. The orange peel would have been there since day one, but no other defects should be appearing as time goes on.

Definitively not orange peel and I think it wasn't there. Aother funny thing with the polisher on 5.5 speed after working the paint for a while it becomes plyable or soft. So soft I can leave a mark with my fingernail and it will dissapear in a few seconds! The car basically saw no sunlight since it was repainted months ago has been garaged all the time. Will try to get pics its difficult to capture it.

sounds like bad paint/mix but, a picture is worth 1,000 words.

Is it possible the painter tried to smooth out a dent or fill in a depression with bondo?
