  • 68 Mustang, trying to get the most out of the paint, need advice

Hello everyone! I have a 68 Mustang that I believe was resprayed sometime in the early 1990's. i dont think the paint is original as I can see overspray inside the original chrome bumpers. Im pretty sure when it was resprayed that it doesnt have a clear coat and believe it it may have been a single stage maaco type of paint job. The paint itself isnt terrible, so i'm trying to get the most out it until I can get the car repainted. Back when the car came into my possession I hit it with the Meguiars 3 step deep crystal system with a porter cable 7424 and followed up with Meguiars NXT 2.0 wax. While this did a lot to help the appearance of the paint I think I can do better. I've always owned clear coated newer mustangs and have relied on Zaino products along with clay bars to achieve a great shine, but I think this single stage paint needs something else to get the most out of it, and i'm not familiar with how to go about it.

Right now the paint has some minor scuffs (from placing cardboard boxes on top of her) in the paint that i'd like to correct along with darker and lighter spots in the paint (not sure how those occurred). I've been reading a lot on these forums about the Show Car Glaze #7 believe that should be a part of my detailing this time around. But i'm not sure how to implement it.

Right now I have a good amount of NXT 2.0 wax and a lot of meguiars ultimate compound, but I dont want to go too harsh on the paint with the UC. What do you guys suggest? Will #7 in and of itself take out the scuffs?

Heres a picture of the car:

I think #80 and #7 would be good products to look at. Plus good wash, clay, wax, etc.

The lighter spots could be thinner paint, so want to be carefull, not working those areas too hard.

But some #80 should be a good start, applied more gently where needed, and then seeing where any more work. #7 could follow up the #80 if wanted.

since you have a DA then use a yellow pad and a cleaner wax, 66 or 151.
      Do some test spots.
If that doesn't give you the results you want then try the UC but just be gentle and don't remove to much paint.
If that doesn't work then you some sanding might be the trick.

The Spots are actually darker spots in the paint, not lighter, which is weird. I think I'll hit with #80 by hand on the horizontal surfaces and see if that does the trick. Then i'll come back and do the whole car with #7, leave it on overnight and then apply a wax and see what that does.

Actually, is there an over the counter equivalent to speed glaze I can pick up at a local auto store?

Well, if they dont have #80, SwirlX or Ult. Polish are options.

SwirlX wont have quite the oils, though following up with #7 would take car of that.

And Ult. Polish would likely end up milder than #80, but a lot of oils as well.
