  • New Paint Job Care

Hello everyone, my name is Luis and I am new to this forum, but have been using Meguiar product for a while. Yesterday I painted my entire car and would like to clean in and protect the paint as much as possible. I used a Lesonal Waterborne casecoat with Lesonal ProAir Clear which is acrylic urethane. My question is, does the rule of waiting 30 days to wax still apply or is there something different? Thank you in advance!

    Welcome aboard, satt96!

Waiting 30 days for wax isn't a rule. It's rumor, hearsay and myth.

Some might call it a "rule of thumb." But unless your specific coating's manufacturer explicitly says otherwise, it's basically a fantasy.

The process by which paint cures is very complex so there is no hard and fast rule. In various paint manufacturer's technical publications, I've read 60 days, 90 days and 120 days as recommendations for their different systems.

Akzo Nobel's tech sheet for Lesonal ProAir Clear doesn't explicitly state a recommendation. So your best bet for the straight story would be to contact an Akzo Nobel technical rep directly. (Do not trust the paint shop unless they can pull out a manual and show you the number in print.)

Personally, if I couldn't get a clear factory recommendation, I'd just be conservative and wait a long time (like DuPont's 120 day recommendation), especially now that it's winter. The curing process takes longer when it's cold.

You can wash and polish it immediately with stuff like Meguiar's Mirror Glaze line products, most of which are designed to be used in paint shops as part of the refinishing process.

Well I painted it in school so I can ask my teacher since he can contact one of their reps.

Today I did use #7 pure polish and it the color is nice and deep and clear.

For the car wash, is the Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo and Conditioner okay to wash it? On the Meguiar website it says its safe for an auto body environment.

Yes, the Gold Class Shampoo would be ok.

Definitely getting a bottle tomorrow then. What about car covers for when it rains and stuff, would it be safe to cover it just when there's weather? I do not have a garage unfortunately.

Generally, unless there is extreme bad weather, you're more likely to get more swirls and scratches from the cover. Dirt sitting on the car or water landing on it wont do anything, and then just washing it off properly.

The only thing to watch would be bird droppings or tree sap. So if you can avoid parking under trees, that tends to be the most important thing.

How often should the car be washed to keep the paint clean? When rinising can a hose be used under light pressure for areas that were not painted?

How often you wash will also depend on how much your car is used. If the car is used regularly, you may have to wash more frequently per week, as for using #7 glaze, it offers no protection. Yes, it adds gloss and depth but it has a tacky feel after removal so most dust and pollutants in my experience sticks to it easily. I had my car's hood repainted a few months ago, i used #7 regularly then it rained within the week. A thin, grayish layer (from air pollutants) was on the hood, had to wash the car to remove that layer. So you may have to wash more frequently also because of that. For rinsing, you can use a hose under light pressure for final rinse to allow it to sheet and minimize spotting.

But it your car isn't used that much which could mean your paint won't get heavy dirt on top of it, you can just remove the light dust with a quick detailer like the original maroon one or d155 last touch (except uqd or m135 synthetic quick detailer due to its small protective polymer content).
