  • a IPA wipe down really needed after using a polish?

My real question is, say I use the Ultimate combo, UC, UP, UPW. Can you top UPW right after UP? Has it been proven that a sealant needs a perfectly clean surface to bond properly, like using IPA? Thanks.

    You can wax right away.

Meguairs only recomends the IPA wipe to check your work if needed. They like to have polish on the surface.

A couple companies say to have a surface with no oils, so you should follow their recomendations.

If you're going from a Megs polish/compound to a Megs wax, then there is no IPA wipedown required.

If you want to make 100% sure you've removed all defects instead of hiding them, then knock yourself out!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Isopropyl alcohol - IPA used to remove traces of wax or compounds or polishes hiding in swirls. If swirls can't be seen they can't be removed and may show up again when you don't want them to, which is most of the time.

(Oh and not a stupid question!)

It should be noted that isopropyl alcohol should not be used straight but rather diluted with water so that you have a roughly 15% - 25% concentration. That should be more than sufficient to remove any oils, solvents, etc from the compounds and polishes you're using. But as has been noted, if you're using all Meguiar's products then there is no need for an IPA wipedown prior to applying any of our waxes/sealants.

As mentioned with Megs waxes/sealants not needing a IPA wipedown, still a good step to use if you have time?

This is actually really good stuff, although a more traditional IPA is much less expensive. But again, if you're using our polish and wax there is no need to do a wipe down between the two steps, so it's actually a bit of a waste of product. Where products like this and IPA really benefit you is to ensure that you've removed all traces of compound during the correction step, just to ensure you're not filling in the last of the defects. We've done this with both IPA and Eraser when rotary compounding with some competitors compounds that looked like they were doing an outstanding job...... until we wiped the surface down and revealed all the holograms. That told us the product wasn't just removing the defects, but it was also hiding the problems it was creating. Had we not wiped down the area and just gone on to polishing and waxing, once everything wore off or was washed off, those holograms would have reared their ugly heads. Better to know early on if you're dealing with that, or at least that you're fully removing the defects you want to remove in the first place. That's the best use of IPA and similar.
