  • My Meguiar's G110V2 nightmare

After countless hours of studying and researching I purchased a Meguiar's G110V2 from the Walmart on 59th Ave and Bell Road here in Phoenix 2 days ago. I paid 179.00 plus 20.00 for an extended warranty from Walmart. This was an unused brand new product. Even had the black straps around the box. I thought wow! I finally decided to take the next step in making my GTO's black paint really stand out. I purchased pads, polish, wax, compound and some Meguiar's Chrome wheel cleaner. I even went ahead and purchased a really thick extention cord. Not the standard kind. This is a Meguiar's product and my GTO we are talking about here.

I got home, read the instructions, assembled it and decided to start it up just to hear it and get a feel for it and to make sure I did not get a D.O.A. The first thing that was odd to me was on setting number 1 the polisher would ramp up and down similar to reving up your car engine with the rpm's rising and falling. I thought hmmm this is odd. Perhaps if I turn up the setting it will go away and it did. But it still struck me as odd. I went online and watched some of the Meguiar's videos AGAIN to try and find one that didnt have music playing in the background to get a feel for how the polisher SHOULD sound. No such luck with that. NOTE TO MEGUIARS: Get rid of the music in the background of your instructional videos.

My next step was to call the customer service line. I called the 1800 # listed in the manual. Every single time I called this number from my home phone landline I got the 'all circuits are busy message please try your call again later.' Hmmmmmm I pay my bills religiously this is weird. Could something be bad with my home phone? So I called a pizza place AND my cellphone and the calls went thru perfectly. No one to call, ask or reference if my polisher is behaving normal.

I thought well this is probably me being the over cautious car guy that I am and decided to give the polisher a shot. Washed my car, clayed it dried it and was ready. This is where my hell begins. In using this polisher this thing would stop with minimal pressure applying the Ultimate Compound. Hmmm okay Ill turn the setting up some. This seemed to help but then the polisher got extremely hot. What finally did it for me was when I saw smoking coming out of the vents in the chassis. So I let the thing cool down for a half hour and tried it again. Tried another extension cord, Same results. WTF? I cant even believe this. This is a respected company putting out a product like this? This product was purchased brand new in the box from a professional retailer. Not a swap meet, clearance store, Joe Blow on Craigslist etc. I work hard for my money and am extremely disappointed with this product. For this thing to get hot to the touch and smoke with minimal use is unacceptable. I never took this polisher past level 5 and even at that it was not for very long. In summary I am not happy at all. This product and the pads were not cheap and I had to save money to even buy it. This was the only one on the shelf at the Walmart.

Sorry to hear about your experience.

There are plenty of folks here who are very happy with their G110 V2's. I'm sure yours is just an exception and I'm even more certain that Meguiars will sort this out for you. Their customer service is second to none. Weird that you couldn't get through to the Customer Service Line...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

It sounds like you might have left the small washer off of the backing plate. This will cause it to overheat due to there not being proper clearance for the plate to spin freely.

I had the same thing happen to my first G110V2. Would not spin out of the box on speed setting 1-5 and smoked like a smoke stack. On my backing plate the washer was installed and did not interfere with the counterweight. I have two porter-cables so I was very familiar with the washers and general usage of DA's. My best guess was the cruise control circuit went bad or had a flaw. Took it back to my PBE and they swapped it and the new unit works awesome. A properly working G110V2 is light years ahead of the porter-cable DA's

Wow, talk about a perfect storm!

Scott, we are truly sorry to hear of your issue with your new buffer, and the issue you had trying to reach our Customer Care Center. The "perfect storm" reference above is regarding a massive power outage that effected a large part of the city of Irvine, CA on Tuesday that impacted out phone system as well. If you tried to reach us on Tuesday that would explain the weird issue when trying to call - but if you tried calling us yesterday then something else weird was going on.

But back to the really important part - the buffer. Again, please accept our apologies for this problem right out of the box, but please also understand that this is not indicative of the buffers in general. Please give another call to our Customer Care Center today and they'll arrange for a replacement right away.

WOW....................What an inconvenience for me and my business! I bought the Meguiar's G110v2 about a week ago. Today it decided to quit working in the middle of a job, which was ONLY my second car for this machine. I noticed right before this happened (while applying wax), the machine slowed down and shut off all together. Checked another outlet, power cord, etc. and found okay. Called Customer Service and was informed that I need to send it back. I'm sure I would have a back-up for this situation, but not having the funds for that, it's not an option.
