  • Ultimate Polish Tips?

    Hi all, I got a bottle of Ultimate Polish 2 years ago and I went to use it today on a black car.

    I followed the directions and did a 2x2 section of the hood by hand.

    When I went to wipe it off (IMMEDIATELY after I applied it) my arm just about fell off trying to buff it! It's really tough to polish and takes a LOT of work to get rid of the haze.

    Does anyone have any tips to making this easier (besides using a buffer)?

    Now I know why I still had an almost full bottle left over from last year. It's a lot of work!

    Use a da.
    To me, polishing a car by hand is rediculious.
    You will never get the proper finish you want by using your hand.
    Spend $150 bucks on a da and save 50 hrs and your arm.

      I have the same problem so I dont think its has anything to do with how old it is so I personally have found it helpful to dampen the microfiber with a quick detailer to aid in wiping off & I've achieved the results I want by doing that

        The paint should be cool to the touch and if the product is drying, work smaller areas as not to allow the product to dry. I have a spray bottle with water in it and if the product starts to dry I use the water to allow more working time or to then wipe the area clean.

            Need to ask ~ was the hood of your car "cool" to the touch? How hot was the temp. the day you did this? I ask that because no matter what product I lay on by hand, I've never had it dry "immediately." Just based on what you wrote, I think the temp. of hood and air caused this to dry to fast.

            I'm new to this forum and the Mequiar's products so if certain products have a "shelf life" then perhaps your polish had expired, causing the problem you had.

            If that happens again, take some detail spray and give your towel or applicator a quick shot of it. You only need to just barely spray a very very small amount.

            I know some guys enjoy the "therapy" of working on their car using the "hands on" method. However, I would highly recommend you invest in a buffer. It only took me "one" time to do a complete "hand detail" on my vehicle. When I was done, I immediately got on the phone and ordered me a PC and Flex buffer. Life is good!

                I've never had a problem with UP and it's application with a DA or removal with an MF towel. Ensure the sheet metal is cool to the touch. I have had some concerns removing ULW from a few vehicles. I found that a wipe down with Meg's QD the next day makes the ULW really pop. I prefer Ultimate products on my '94 F150 and use different brand products on my 2011 Ford Fusion and F150. For whatever reason, the ULW is difficult to remove from my 2011 vehicles.

                  I also found it EXTREMELY difficult to remove. I was used to using ColorX as my polish followed by M16, but bought a bottle of the UP because I couldn't find ColorX, and the directions on the UP bottle seemed easy "Easy Wipe Off". Well, it was not easy for me on a 2 x 2 section of a black trunk. (Using a buffer and car was cool) So I searched high and low for ColorX and that is what I will be using for my polish.
                  Looks like I am going to have nearly a full bottle of UP to grow old on my work bench.

                    I guess I should just stick to the Deep Crystal Polish (which comes off EXTREMELY easy) until I can get a DA polisher.

                    Stupid question, but I was on AutoGeek looking at the Meg's 6 inch G110V2 polisher and I can't figure out what size pads it would use... There is a bundle pack that uses 7 inch pads. There is another bundle pack that comes with 5.5 inch pads. Add to the fact that there are no 6 inch pads on the Meg's section, I'm really really confused lol. What size would you use with that polisher!?

                        i had the same problem with a very old paint, what i did was to put 2 coats of wax (even if it is not polsihed) and then once the paint is "refreshed" you can work it very well, and you can remove it with no problem at all

                          My paint is only a few years old, but has been extremely well taken car of, so the paint is not the issue. As for your suggestion, while appreciated, I think I will pass.
                          I don't mind a little work but to have wax the car twice, then put UP on it, just so it is easy to remove, and then have to wax again seems a little much.

                            I would pick 5.5". Smaller size pad works better with DA for paint correction. My $0.02.

                              I was going to say the same thing. Excessive wax is really difficult to remove. Put on thin coats and the result will be the same, but much less effort.
