  • Re-Painted Car Radio

I re-painted my car RADIO buttons on my Mazda 3... Just figured I would post my work here because anywhere else and people would think I am crazy to have such an obsession!

    Before I did anything:

Okay, so I pulled the whole RADIO unit out of the Dashboard AND I pulled the faceplate of of the RADIO:

Then I made a mask for each button... That red part was covered by tape before I painted:

Then I painted with Krylon Fusion (since, it bonds to plastic without any special sanding or primers):

^^^ It is NOT a perfect black, but ANY black is a closer match than white chip marks everywhere!

This is what it looked like painted:

Now, I masked and repainted the other button... Sorry, I cannot find those pictures, but it was the same process.

Okay, now it looked like this:

I put the faceplate back on the Radio/CD playing thing with a couple of screws on each side... like this:

    After the paint-work:

    Re-installed in the Vehicle:

Well, what do you think of the BEFORE and AFTER?

Can't say that we've ever seen anyone do this on such a modern radio, but good for you! Obviously we don't think you're crazy at all...... but then we're a bit crazy (Car Crazy, at least) so take that for what it's worth.

Definitely a great job! Very brave and gutsy of you to do that, I find dismantling those plastic panels on modern (or any) dashboards a very very delicate exercise, and same goes for the electronic stuff. I feel that 1 small mistake can put one in trouble. Nicely done!

Yeah, I find the same thing... I am an IT administrator at work, so I am used to taking apart things like Servers, Computers, and Laptops... at this point, it doesn't bother me taking apart electronics. Besides, last summer my car quit ejecting CDs, so I learned real quick how to replace the Car Stereo Unit... Essentially the dealer wanted something like $600 for a new one and $195 to install it... I bought the EXACT part (different trim color) on the Internet for $120ish and got it installed in about 30 minutes. Point being, if I totally mess it up, worst case scenario would be $120... which would be bad but not the end of the world.
