  • Scratch/Scuff removal

Hi all, noob here. I was hand washing my new 2012 F150 and noticed a couple marks and wanted some input on removal. I'll have to figure out how to upload pics but until then. The scuff on the door doesn't seem to go past the clearcoat and may just be surface?

There is another scuff on the running board that seems to be the same but I'm not positive and not sure what product I could use on chrome running board.

Can you feel the paint scratch with a finger nail?

That chrome one doesnt look good. Is the actual chrome layer scraped off?

          Re: Scratch/Scuff removal

I can't feel the scratch with a finger nail. I was thinking about using scratchx but didn't know if maybe clay would be better first (trying to stay with least aggressive first). I have never clayed a vehicle before and not sure how aggressive it is or if it has any capabilities of removing a scuff like this.

The chrome does look bad and can't tell for sure if layer scraped off, need to spend some more time in the light and really look it over.

            Re: Scratch/Scuff removal

Chrome is just a thin layer over a cheap metal... if the chrome is gone, its gone. Would need to look at professional repairs, new piece, etc.

No, clay wont remove a scratch, it doesnt do that kind of cleaning. But it is a good idea in general for the car, if you are going ot get into detailing a bit.

Let me find a thread from last week that looks similar...

                Re: Scratch/Scuff removal

Thanks Murr! I know Target has ScratchX since I was there today looking to see what they carried. I will pick it up tomorrow and see what happens. I need to find some foam applicators since all they had were terry cloth. Maybe Walmart or Autozone will have some.

I am planning on the 5 step process but it will have to wait a few weeks. My work schedule is not allowing me any time right now.

The chrome step will have to wait if it requires replacement . The last thing I want to do is explain to the Mrs. why I need to drop more money on a truck I've only had 4 weeks! Luckily it's on the passenger side so I don't have to look at it as much.

I'd go UC if they have it...

                  I always like

                  1. Wash
                  2. Clay
                  3. ColorX
                  4. Wax

                  for a quicker detail.

                    Re: Scratch/Scuff removal

Murr I didn't see your post before I went to the store. I bought SwirlX and ScratchX. I washed and then tried the SwirlX. It did remove part of the scuff, however after 2 attempts with it I wasn't getting very far so I switched to ScratchX. This seemed to be working better. I took my time and worked small area of the mark at a time and after about 20 to 30 mins worth of working the scratch gently with several applications and cleanings It has removed all but very little of the mark. I then applied Next 2.0 wax over the side door and it looks great. I will post a picture tomorrow.

I went to the dealer to pick up permanent tags and showed my sales person the pictures above and then had him try to locate the mark. I had to point it out after a few mins!

I will do a complete detail in a couple weeks once work slows down. I want to try and work the smaller spots of the scratch then and see if I can get the rest out. If I can't get it out with the ScratchX I will pick up some UC.

                    Thanks again for the info!

                        Re: Scratch/Scuff removal

You dont want to focus too much on a small spot, you want to keep working over about a hand sized area at least. Really focusing on one small spot is how you go through the clear coat.

Remember, it may not be completly removable if there is a deep spot, so dont overdo it. If you cant see it, that may be the place to stop.

Thanks Murr! The spots on the picture above are actually reflections from something. The scratch is pretty much gone. As far as work area I basically did the entire door with the ScratchX. You just confirmed what I had already assumed in not wanting to focus on too small of an area.
