    i need of advice

    hi i am new to the forums.i have had my car sprayed about 6 weeks ago and im wondering how to go about getting the best finish.it was sprayed by my neighbour and while it isnt a professional job its still pretty good.
    he has only lightly sanded it for maybe 5 minutes and told me to go over it with the ultimate compound.i have done that and while it has improved its still looking dull.
    what do you guys think does it need more sanding ? he also mentioned using a clay bar would that help with the shine of it ?

    How about a Macro pic of the paint?
    I don't think UC by itself will remove sanding marks.
    I think you need to properly wet sand and buff it.
    clay won't do anything, clay is for removing bonded contaminates from the paint surface.

      Yeah, doesnt look very wet sanded.

      Can you say more about what he did? Do you know how much paint? Or what sanding he did?

        thanks for the replys as far as i know he only did 5 to 10 minutes of wet sanding on it about 2 weeks after it was painted.so i think it could use more sanding to bring out the shine.im not sure how much paint he used i bought 4 litres of midnight blue and said he could keep what was over and also i think he only did 2 or maybe 3 layers of clear.what grade of sand paper should i be using ?

          Only did 5 to 10 minutes of sanding? How much of the car was painted? Did he just spot sand to remove some dirt nibs or is the intent to sand the entire area that was painted, and with what grit sandpaper? Are you experienced with machine buffing to remove the sanding marks?

          We'd like to see him finish down to 3000 grit after starting with something a bit more coarse (maybe 1000 grit max) and then you'd need to either rotary compound with a wool pad and M105, or go with the DA Microfiber System on a dual action polisher with some D300 Correction Compound. But if you've never used a rotary buffer, this isn't a great time to learn - the learning curve is long and steep on the tool and you can do some real damage in a hurry if you're not sure what you're doing with it.

            well the whole car was repainted but i am unsure how much of the old paint he sanded off.he just gave it a quick sand with 1500 grit paper and told me to go over it with the ultimate compound.i do have a buffer but its a fairly cheap one.
            i will see if i can get some 3000 grit and give it a go.

              Its aways best to go from heavy grit to a more fine grit like 3000 when finishing with wet sands then going to a rotary with a wool pad to remove the sanding marks. No other buffer can remove the marks fully other than the rotary. Is this what you have? How much experience do you haev using a rotary if any?

                thanks for the advice.i tried a few places and was unale to find 3000 wet/dry so i had to settle for 2000.it is working quite well though.im using it as softly as i can.as far as buffer goes i have 1 of these.

                  You are going to be seriously challenged trying to remove even 2000 grit sanding marks with that buffer. Generally you need a high speed rotary buffer for this job, or a good quality DA buffer with our DA Microfiber Correction System. 2000 grit marks, especially done by hand, are much deeper than even typical swirl marks are and you'd have a hard time even removing swirls with that buffer. The ONLY exception to that would be if the respray is incredibly soft, but that's highly doubtful. We don't know how much you've been sanding so far, but you might want to stop sanding and see if you can remove any of your existing sanding marks with that buffer before going any further. Unless your neighbor is willing to compound out the sanding marks for you.

                    well i have removed most of the scratches with the ultimate compound but it is starting to swirl as u can see in the picture.what is the best way to get rid of these ? do you think its because there isnt much clear coat on it.

                      Okay, I'm confused now. Did your neighbour repaint the entire car, or just a section?

                      In your original pic you posted, the sun's reflected glare hid the top edge of your bonnet (hood). The second pic you've just posted shows what looks like a distinct lack of clear coat, which either means you've sanded through it or that panel wasn't painted by your neighbour.
