  • Inside of Windows Keep Getting a Film...

Hey guys. My title is probably a little inaccurate, but nonetheless here we go.

Also let me make it clear that I am not asking advice on how to clean my windows... Unless for some reason I need to try a product of some sort? I've just been using a damp towel and occasionally Invisible Glass and occasionally a spray wax. I am more interested in why this is happening.

The car is a 2005 Chevy Equniox. I clean the windows and interior on this the exact same way I do on my truck. After a week or so, my windows (inside) will still be close to "crystal clear" on my truck. However, on the Equinox, after a week or so, there is a hazy film of some sort that most noticably develops on the inside of the front windshield, back windshield, and both of the rear windows. Again, I am talking about a film on the INSIDE of the window, not the outside. You don't really know it's there unless the sun is shining thru just right.

So what's causing the Equinox to get such a funky film on the inside of the windows? None of the other vehicles in the family do this except the Equinox. Is it maybe something with the materials used to create the plastics of the interior? Maybe they keep releasing a gas of some sort? I'm stumped on this one....

I know, I get it too.

Seemed worse when I used the Nxt Protectant... better, but still does it with the Supreme Shine.

Strange... hmm I don't use any protectants on the interior to begin with. I've always just wiped everything with one of my towels I used for drying the vehicle off.

        Bingo!

It's the plasticizer. When your dash gets hot from the sun it gives off a gas that deposits as a film on your windows. Different cars have different types of plastic so some are worse than others.

I believe the term is "off gassing"

Since the car is a 2005 model, I would think that the all the off-gassing would be completed years ago.

Is it possible that you accidentally turn on the "Recir" or maybe the switch is defective so it's on all the time?

No because when I push recirculate I hear the fan speed increase which means its not pulling outside air in. But in any case, I've had the fan speed to off for quite a few weeks, I always have all the windows down.

Does your vehicle sit out in direct sunlight??
I have an 07 Equinox and notice the "Film" you speak of, but only after mine has sat out in the sunlight. I just assumed it was the sunlight having some affect on the window cleaner that was used to clean the windows. I use Invisible Glass as well. I have used Meguiar's glass cleaner as well, but never really paid attention to which glass cleaner I used before noticing the "Film"

Its just from your dash and products you put on your dash off gassing over time it will stop use a low voc dressing or a voc complient dressing and it should minimize your problem!

well rather then trying to figure out what is causing it (probably some off gassing of something) let's try to prevent the "stuff" from attaching to the glass.
After cleaning with whatever window cleaner you like, try some Rain X or better yet D156 Xpress Wax. Use very little. Don't spray the whole window wet. Just 1 spray on a MF and that should prevent anything from sticking to the glass therefore no more "fogginess"

I vaguely recall I read somewhere that the main culprit is own skin. We shed ~30,000 cells an hour. I guess you have more passengers or longer ride in one car than other. My $0.02.

Gonna attempt to respond to everyone's comment since I'm on my phone and can only quote one person.

                        The car does live outside.

I've used spray wax on the inside of the windshield but it did not change anything.

I'm not so sure ill agree with the skin cell idea as the equinox doesn't see many passengers at all in it, or any type of extended travel time. In fact, it sees less travel than my truck does.

Again, I do not use any dash interior protectants.

I think the answer to this is the out gassing of the dash, although like someone else said I think, it should have out gassed a lot of its funk.
