  • Reformulated M-02 Fine Cut Cleaner

    #02 Fine-Cut Cleaner

Anyone have any info on the new formula #02 Fine Cut Cleaner? The new formula is for use by hand, orbital, DA, or rotary. I received my new bottle yesterday and just wanted some info. The old formula was rotary only.

The VOC changes has prompted the use changes. The others in this line (heavy cut) were cut from the line up.

That's about all I know. Well that and KenL_BayAreaM5s gets awesome results with the product. Take a look.

MIke, do you feel that the #2 leaves a better finish as opposed to #83 when using the PC + polishing pad?

Good question. Hopefully we get tons of good questions with this thread about the new formula Fine cut cleaner.

Man, I'm getting that feeling of deja vu....first no one believes me that MY bottle of #2 is labeled for both hand and machine application (it could be 20 years old...some day I will find my receipts...I bought it as part of the "new" Hi-Tech line and process, which was for the new clearcoat paints. If you followed the bottle instructions, you followed the #2 with #9 and then with #26), then it gets discontinued, and now it's back...and it can be used by hand...

EDIT: The online store doesn't show this as a "new" product; still says gallons available and rotary only.

You are correct about an older bottle listing M02 as for use by hand or machine, so was M01 and M04. The change in directions took place when basecoat/clearcoat systems began to work their way into the refinishing industry. Body shops were forced to switch over to basecoat/clearcoat paint systems in order to repair new car finishes that auto manufactures were switching over to in order to be able to successfully repair and match the factory finish.

What we found out was that clear coat finishes are scratch-sensitive, and these traditional Mirror Glaze Paint Cleaners could no longer be used by hand without marring the finish. So the directions on the labels were changed to prevent enthusiasts and consumers from using them by hand. They still work when applied using a rotary buffer and for this reason, they continue to sell well into Meguiar's Professional channels, as many Pros still use them.

My old bottle says in part "Meguiar's Mirror Glaze No. 2 Hi-Tech Cleaner is the state-of-the-art "finesse" cleaner for clear coat and urethane paint finishes...For complete gloss restoration, follow with Meguiar's Mirror Glaze No. 9 Hi-Tech Swirl Remover".

I also have an old bottle of #4 that warns it will cause hairline scratches which will have to be removed by polishing. At that time this was a SS only product.

The new bottle's directions say follow with #9 and top with #26. I just got rid of my #9, hope something else will work. I'm sure #82 will be alright in place of #9.
